What Happens When a Slogan Becomes the Curriculum – The Atlantic

Photo illustration of a student waving a Black Lives Matter banner in a classroon In Evanston, parents are asked to quiz their kids on whiteness and give them approachable examples of “how whiteness shows up in school or in the community.” A curriculum inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement is spreading, raising questions about the line between education and indoctrination.

Evanston wants to be what Berlin was in the 1930s

Evanston has decided to reward Black-identified folks $25,000 for “being Black in Evanston”. This is Evanston’s newly-approved reparations program for equity-justice rewards to its Black residents for racial injustices incurred by former Evanston municipal segregation policies. Must be an exceptionally virtuous feeling for the “not-Black” SJW Evanston homeowners, who pay amongst highest real estate tax prorations in Chicago real estate market, to know that those same earmarked monies could have been used to pay-down the Evanston School District annual expenditures, to reduce overall real estate tax burden for every homeowner in Evanston. I think this new reparation plan is Evanston’s… Read more »

“The program aims to financially assist Black residents who “suffered discrimination in housing as a result of City ordinance, policy or practice, or are direct descendents of a Black Evanston resident who lived in Evanston between 1919 to 1969,” according to the city’s drafted proposal……It would grant up to $25,000 to qualifying Black residents for home improvement, mortgage assistance, or as downpayment on an Evanston home.

Oh, the fine print really limits the number of people eligible for these reparations…..

Again, Evanston enough said! They create their own issues.

Evanston is strongly a Democratic voting community, it has a large black population relatively speaking, it has a high average educational level, women outnumber men, the percentage of over 65 voters (ie the non woke voters) is lower than the black population, 95% have broadband, the vast majority of the employed there work in health care or social assistance fields, its 5 times more densely populated per square mile than Lockport, my town. Its easy to see which way the wind is blowing in Evanston and why.

I read this article last night. The Atlantic has been doing some very good work, I finally subscribed. I came here today to see if you would post this. It’s so very important. Thank you.

Well, it’s not as though I agree with everything they write. But over the last year or so, I have read some solid articles. They wrote about the hydroxychloroquine debacle (the bogus “research” and how Lancet published and then retracted it) – no other publication would touch it. They’ve written several articles like the one linked here as well as articles on the flawed thinking of wokeism and cancel culture. They also wrote about Trump’s operation warp speed and gave him the credit he was due. I just think they are better than WaPo and NYT. I assure you I… Read more »

Guilt and fear. This is what progressives have been selling for years.
Guilt and fear are the calling cards of every authoritarian regime throughout history. Guilt and fear-mongering do not lead to the utopia they seem to believe. It leads to exactly the opposite. Kumbaya-ers, wake up!

I’ve taught my children to respond to slurs of ‘unearned privilege’ by saying “So what? If you were born tall, should you cut off your legs to make yourself shorter? If you were born smart, should you play dumb instead? If you were born beautiful, should you make yourself ugly? All of these advantages are unearned. As too is ‘White Privilege’. Society – according to the intersectionalist – has conferred upon my children supposed benefits of being White. I ask my children why would they give up their ‘White Privilege’ just as they would give up their beauty, height or… Read more »

I was just about to say exactly this but you beat me by 2 minutes…The author has to hedge his bets through by repeatedly saying that he totally, 100% agrees with BLM and everything they stand for …but…. it’s a bridge to far to force this curriculum on kids

The Atlantic has written some fantastic articles over the past couple of years. I do agree they are lefty left, but I have been enjoying many good reads. I cannot with the New York Times anymore. I try to read liberal publications because I believe it is necessary – but no more NYT for me.

Yes! Totally agree. Also, this article was terrifying me. I was blindsided by the material they were using. I was also curious reading about the anonymous emailer concerned his child points out “white privilege” in their household. I consider myself pretty open minded – but I believe that would necessitate serious conversation. To be honest, I’ve always had those conversations with my kids anyway. Some believe it’s best not to influence their children in this way, I disagree. I feel it’s critical my kids understand the values we hold and why. Otherwise, how would we balance what they are being… Read more »

You are right, absolutely share your values with your children. Leftists really hate my basically normal, well-behaved, healthy, above average intelligence, non-tattoo’d, straight haired and cis-gendered, and happy children. And let them hate. The tears of leftists raging against the conservation of all things normal, natural, truthful and beautiful, is of no concern to me.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
