What to know about Illinois’ assault weapons ban – Capitol News IL

The assault weapons ban went into effect when Gov. JB Pritzker signed it in January 2023, immediately prohibiting the sale in Illinois of a long list of weapons and attachments. But Illinoisans who own assault weapons – a term that is itself contentious among gun advocates – can keep them, so long as they purchased them before the law went into effect and register them with the Illinois State Police before the end of this year.

How many convenience stores have been robbed with .50 caliber rifles? Drive by shootings? Bank robberies? How come a particular firearm that was bought 25 years ago, legally with the states approval, is now dangerous and must be registered/regulated? How many thugs, drug dealers, gang members will be lining up to register firearms? Who will be prosecuted, if this unconstitutional law survives court challenges if they are found to be in possession of a banned firearm? I see you’re on the cusp of understanding. The goal of the assault rifle ban is to make you, the conservative deplorable, in a criminal, so they can arrest you, jail you, wreck your life. They know this law won’t stop even a single shooting. But many naively assume that is the intention of the law. The intention of the law is to turn 2.3 million legal gun owners into criminals.
