When Politics and Physics Collide – City Journal

"While policies can favor one class of technology over another, neither political rhetoric nor financial largesse can make the impossible possible. ... Delivering reliable 24–7 electricity using episodic power sources (wind and solar) unavoidably necessitates both over-building (to supply extra energy) and some kind of energy-storage system. The combination of these two requirements leads to a doubling or tripling of delivered energy costs compared with the 'spontaneous' cost of one machine operating."

Excellent article. The economies of the Midwest and America grew rapidly and supported an increasing standard of living for all based on reliable, inexpensive power. The Leftist Democrats with their climate ideology wish to turn that equation upside down. Why, because they really hope to lower everyones standard of living, except for their elite.

They actually want you to die. YOU are the carbon they want to reduce. Saving mother Gaia means using less energy; and using less energy means more people will die. Energy is our lifeblood, it gives us heating and cooling, brings fresh water to our homes, takes us to the doctor, delivers us food. These same people repeatedly say there are too many people in the world, and if they got rid of the deplorables, the world would be a better place.

Too bad the people are now scientifically illiterate and cannot demand a federal scientific group study. During WW2 Vannemar Bush did establish such a group. When Sputnik went up there was panic which resulted in rejuvenation of STEM education which eventually gave this country an unbeatable industrial base. When I was in college during the late 60s’ physics was called by Luddites the study of dead things or ways of making them dead. Hard believe that this country once determined its need for the Minuteman deterrence system and in 5 years about 400 silos with a command structure were in… Read more »

Part of the problem today with Americans getting STEM degrees is that many American companies believe American STEM graduates are too expensive, so they hire foreigner or ship jobs overseas.

Almost a quarter of STEM jobs in the US are held by foreign-born (often at lower wages than natives) and the article doesn’t even address the off-shoring of STEM jobs for lower wages.

Americans have watched this for a generation now and, despite the recent renewed interest in the field, STEM is still a place where only the strong survive in America.

I’m thinking of retiring to NC where 30-40% of the electrical energy is produced by nukes.

Food for thought.

NC is not perfect, but the gap with IL is now like the Grand Canyon on near everything of substance for middle class America. And the only reason I can think of for this enormous difference is that the majority in IL like it this way – very hard to fathom if you are not a Leftist.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
