Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. True. Even here around Chicago, I’ve heard quite a few people say it would almost be best for Johnson to win to “get it over with.”
Aka Dan Proft every morning for four hours. But Brandon Johnson isn’t merely getting it over with. Chicago isn’t going to collapse overnight if he’s elected. Brandon is merely the next phase in Chicago’s sad and depressingly long and slow decline into blight and misery. Whomever comes next after Brandon in 4 or possibly 8 or 12 years will be even worse than Brandon. Remember that many big cities in 2020 had insanely progressive mayors.
