You Can’t Throw the Bums Out if You’ve Voted With Your Feet – Wall Street Journal

A net 175,000 people left Cook County between 2020 and 2022. Brendan Johnson’s margin of victory was about 20,000 votes. How many of the city’s expats would have voted for moderate reformer Paul Vallas? Therein lies an enormous problem for Chicago and other big cities: Left-wing policies are driving away the types of voters and businesses needed for a course correction. Public unions, and especially the teachers unions, have augmented their control of the Democratic Party and formed an unholy alliance with the woke left. The result: less-informed citizens who see the ruin around them and vote for more of the same.

Normies aren’t as engaged in politics. That’s why they’re normies. When there are large numbers of normies, typically enough of them are engaged at a bare minimum, just enough to offset the wackos. Now the normies are in short supply. Since the wackos are all-consumed by politics and it encompasses their entire identity, they are pouncing.

No question about it– educated, publicly aware, intelligent people are leaving these jurisdictions. CPS grads, who can’t read or write or count their change, are left to vote for demagogues who promise them a better life with absolutely no wherewithal to deliver it. The socialist , race baiting, soak- the- rich screamers are in control and the poor folk who listen to the dribble are dragged along for he ride. And things will just get worse for them.

There are many young, white, well-educated woke people in Cook County that vote for “progressives,” too. That’s a big reason why Johnson won. These people don’t think much of white, male baby boomers, blaming them for most of the ills of American society. It wouldn’t have mattered how weak Vallas’s opponent was; the wokesters would’ve voted for that opponent.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
