Lawmakers conveniently ignore the full impact of inflation when it comes to ordinary Illinoisans. Take the personal exemption on the state income tax. For tax year 2023, the exemption will not rise with inflation as it should under current law. And that means a higher tax bill for everyone.

Suburban office landlords just endured the worst quarter of demand in nearly three years, a continuation of the downsizing trend that has pushed the vacancy rate to another all-time high.
Chemical maker Ineos has laid off 49 workers at its facility near Joliet. The company said it is shutting down a plant that makes a curing agent for epoxy, resins, paints and other products following “a lengthy unplanned shutdown imposed by our utilities’ contractor, combined with significant uncertainty in the market upon restart.”
David Greising, of the Better Government Association: “But the court-appointed monitor, Maggie Hickey, in a report last November found that the CPD had complied with only 6 percent of its requirements in the 236-page decree — five years after implementation began. The department is so far behind that the deadline for full compliance has been extended.”
