Illinois State Board of Education adopts culturally responsive teaching standards – Center Square

ISBE officials said the standards aim to foster classroom and school environments in which every student feels that they belong, which is critical to improving academic and behavioral outcomes for Illinois’ diverse students. Opponents of the requirements said they prevent teachers and students from holding diverse points of view and will force everyone to follow one perspective.

Both Capitol News Illinois (CNI) and The Center Square (TCS) state the CRTL standards will also be used to evaluate teachers. First, the CNI article dated November 10, 2020, titled, “Proposed new teacher standards spark controversy.” “If approved by JCAR, the standards would become part of the standards by which all teachers and administrators are evaluated.” http://www.capitolnewsillinois.com/NEWS/proposed-new-teacher-standards-spark-controversy Next, TCS article dated December 16, 2020, titled, “Illinois State Board of Education adopts culturally responsive teaching standards.” “Teachers will be evaluated on these standards during their certification process and in-school job evaluations.” http://www.thecentersquare.com/illinois/illinois-state-board-of-education-adopts-culturally-response-teaching-standards/article_986a714a-3fe2-11eb-b058-7bda94bb7a62.html However there is no mention of evaluation in the… Read more »

The following College Fix article describes the use of “cultural competency” at the Madison Metropolitan School District and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The article also points to a Michigan Technological University explanation of cultural competency, and activists attempted insertion of cultural competency into Washington State University, & Ohio University. The College Fix. School district: Base teacher layoffs not on seniority but ‘cultural competency’. By Dave Huber, Associate Editor. June 6, 2020. http://www.thecollegefix.com/school-district-base-teacher-layoffs-not-on-seniority-but-cultural-competency Compare “cultural competency to the use of “cultural responsiveness” by the ISBE in the proposed CRTL standards implementation of the DLRT iniative. This kind of thing comes about when curriculums are packed with commercially and scientifically useless studies. Funny how engineers, chemists, mathematicians, rocket scientists, etc. Have no use for such standards. Education has become a joke. It costs money for a school to stand up an engineering or chemistry class, in both finding rare teaching talent and lab equipment. However they can stand up a racial bias class with no outlay in equipment and a talentless teacher whose only requirement is knowing the narrative and can insult anyone thinking differently. Student outcomes of skill and merit reign in what is hard… Read more »

Accusing adults of “white fragility” is one thing. As adults, we should be able to reach our own conclusions. But how evil do you have to be to start telling 6 year olds that they too are racists? It boggles the mind that there are people who consider that to be education.

One reason the CRTL standards have not received more coverage is some of the vocabulary and phrases are not well understood by the mainstream public. Also, more commonly used words were omitted from the standards and there was no explainer document. Much of the standards require translation for the average person to understand their exact meaning, how they will be utilized at the collegiate and PreK – 12th grade levels to train educators, and eventually in the classroom to educate children. For example what exactly is meant by system of inequity, oppressive conditions, biases and perceptions (what biases and perceptions?),… Read more »

The ISBE and the supporters who developed the CRTL standards live in an educrat bubble which is intolerant of opposing views. The proposed standards are not known much less understood by the mainstream public. The standards are intended to trickle down to affect the education of every single student in public and many in private PreK – 12th grade education and no doubt early education is also a target. ISBE knows fully well that hardly anyone outside the educrat bubble follows ISBE rule development. They don’t care. They want to push the CRTL agenda and cannot fathom why everyone doesn’t… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
