“It’s sustainable energy but also jobs, 700 jobs in the Byron plant that people count on and they play a lot in taxes so I think that it makes sense to put together a bipartisan bill that works for everybody,” Rep. Andrew Chesney said.
I’m a proponent of nuclear power. But the plant only has 15 years of life left, any attempt to extend its life is flirting with disaster. Lawmakers created the environment where nuclear power has to compete with subsidized power generation. If it made economic sense in that environment to plan construction of a replacement reactor there would be companies proposing it rather than proposing acceleration of shutting it down.
In this day and age what are the chances that a new nuclear power plant would be constructed? It’s been how many years since one was built and the permits, regulations, inspections, impact reports etc would take how many years to clear? Add in the non stop law suits from the greenies and it would take probably 20+ yrs before a new plant would be operational at a cost of billions. Dont worry solar and wind will save the day. Just in case, stock up on candles and firewood.

As a little girl struggled to finish her homework by candlelight she asked her mom, “What did we have before candles mommy?” and mom patted her head and said, “Electricty dear, we had electricity, but it was bad for the environment”.
If this bill passes, say goodbye to local control over all Illinois parks and expect to see open drug and alcohol use, needles, no sanitation and fire hazards, but no ordinary park users.
