Even in Illinois politics, Gov. JB Pritzker’s betrayal and dishonesty on fair maps is as shameless and destructive as anything before.
His promises as a candidate and as governor were unequivocal and frequent, summarized in this way by ABC News: “Pritzker voiced support for an independent commission to draw maps and removing political considerations in placing the lines. He vowed to veto any map authored by politicians, such as these.”
Watch him yourself in this video:
Now he has done the opposite.
Worse, he went further than legislative maps, signing on to partisan maps drawn in secret for Illinois Supreme Court elections, the first time they’ve been redrawn in sixty years.
Illinois maps were already rigged in favor of Pritzker’s Democrats, which helped them obtain the supermajorities they hold in both houses of the General Assembly. But the tortured, new map lines are a further leap into the extreme. As summarized by the Wall Street Journal,
Democrats jammed through new state legislative maps that combine 14 Republicans in the Illinois House into seven districts. That means seven GOP incumbents are guaranteed to lose in party primaries. Republicans will also lose their incumbent advantage in seven districts. No Democrats were combined in the same House districts.
Technology has made map drawing all the more powerful and sinister. It was Barack Obama who warned about that as president in a 2016 speech to the Illinois General Assembly. “Technology allows parties in power to precision-draw constituencies so that the opposition’s supporters are packed into as few districts as possible, he said. “ That’s why our districts are shaped like earmuffs or spaghetti.”
Obama warned of another consequences of gerrymandering we’ve seen play out in Illinois. “While it may insulate some incumbents from a serious challenge from the other party, it also means that the main thing those incumbents are worried about are challengers from the most extreme voices in their own party. So our debates move away from the middle, where most Americans are, towards the far ends of the spectrum. And that polarizes us,” he said.
That’s what we have now — extremist incumbents run all of Illinois government and our politics are polarized. Now we’ll have more.
Republicans in control in other states do their own gerrymandering, which is about the only defense offered for Democrats who do it in Illinois. But a promise made to do better without regard to other states is still a promise. It’s what Obama specifically called for. Pritzker betrayed not just his own promises but the express hopes of a president he worked hard to elect.
What’s at stake is whether Illinois’ structure of government today can ever permit it to cease being a one-party state, regardless of what the electorate thinks. The state is already precariously at the edge of illegitimacy, where its people may conclude that their government no longer derives its powers justly – in the manner articulated by the Founders.
That conclusion may be sealed if Pritzker and his party succeed in passing a new state constitutional amendment that will be on the ballot in November 2022, which would replace the power of the legislature and local governments over labor negotiations with a vast, new open-ended constitutional right.
And now gerrymandering has been extended to the state’s highest court. Republicans had hopes for turning the Illinois Supreme Court away from its record as a Democratic political forum but those hopes, too, are now diminished.
History therefore may eventually record JB Pritzker as the first governor since secession to delegitimize a state government.
In the meantime, many national news outlets are now reporting on Pritzker’s signature on the maps. Commentary thereon will follow. They should call it straight: JB Pritzker is a liar and a fraud.

Audio and summary
If this bill passes, say goodbye to local control over all Illinois parks and expect to see open drug and alcohol use, needles, no sanitation and fire hazards, but no ordinary park users.
Why is everyone so bent out of shape….this has been Illinois politics for at least the last 50 years or more……what’s changed…..Everyone alive and dead keep voting for it….so stop Whining….if you don’t like it then move…you have like 3-4 perfectly good states that border Illinois.
It’s hard to let go of the bone.
PURE SCUMBAG…….AND THE IDIOTS WILL KEEP ELECTING THIS TRASH AND THEN CONTINUE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT…VICIOUS CIRCLE………SHOULD OF GIVEN RAUNER A CHANCE…….BY NOT TREATING HIM LIKE THEY TREATED TRUMP……..BUT THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE AND ILL HAS NO COMMON SENSE
Sue, Illinois is full of corrupt politicians.
ONLY CORRUPT POLITICIANS RUN FOR THE JOB!!!
I truly wish there was a way to get a real RICO investigation in this state. But with career demonrats in the Justice Dept and in the the state govt from top to bottom, no serious investigation stands a chance.
Governor Flintstone should be recalled, he is the worst governor of my adult lifetime.
Yes Pritzker is a traitor and a fraud
IL’s voters went hardcore D in 2016 because ‘Orange Man Bad’ not realizing, or caring, that they put the crazy people in charge of IL government as the #resistance. And this is what they get. And unless they are IL political junkies (and there are maybe ten thousand, twenty thousand in the state) they have no idea what is going on and few of them even care. All that matters is the D next to their name.
Sadly, all too true.
Call him what he is? Really?
OK, a tyrant
OK, a hypocrite
OK, a horrible governor and leader.
One more for the jail.
Please let us know what can be done this man should be ousted immediately unfortunately we have no decent politicians in the United States or especially Illinois disgusted with the whole system here to help in anyway Mark
Those in power get to make the rules, generally speaking. For better or worse that’s the way it works. Hyperventilating about it won’t change that reality. Change usually is a long-term process and requires a huge amount of political education among the general public as well as patient persistence in doing it. Use generous amounts of honey instead of vinegar as ingredients in any such effort and the desired result will be more palatable and probably quicker, a lesson we all need to learn.
James, I could not disagree more. That kind of soft response to official, moral misconduct as gross as Pritzker’s and so many others cannot be met with complacency. It will only be stopped when people with basic decency scream with all their might. Evil is not only afoot in America it is in power. No prisoners and no retreats.
Your are entitled to your opinion, but to me its the typical response when someone’s favorite political oints of view are not in power at the moment. The other side is forever cast as “the enemy” in thought if not said expressly. Humanity and its governance are forever evolving, and that’s a slow, slow process except where civil wars occur. We all need to do our best to try to undersand the other fellow’s point of view, and “there are always two sides to every story.” What’s black-and-white as to the correct ways of governance to some is bound to… Read more »
Mark, I agree with you. IL residents have suffered for many years with inordinate taxes and user fees, and James is telling them to just be patient. I imagine people were saying that 30 years ago. Since that time, things got much worse. “Change is usually a long-term process …” So, James, how long should it take to ease the burden on the IL taxpayer? Would 100 years be enough time?
A related question is: how much population loss can IL politicians bear? Will they be concerned when IL drops out of the top 10 in population? I doubt it, because their retirement pensions and free health care won’t be affected. As many readers noted, the only solution for taxpayers to ease their burden is to relocate out of state. Most residents figured out by now that change to significantly benefit the taxpayer will take a long time or may never happen. That’s why IL loses population year after year.
They don’t care if Republicans leave. In fact, they are actively driving you out of state with the hopes Bill Gates will buy your farm land when you leave.
Who knows? Maybe we shoud nuke the dreaded THEM, the ones who ruin our lives! What say ye?
Conveniently, here in Illinois, anyone who is paying attention knows who “Them” are: AFSCME, SEIU, IFT, CTU, All Illinois Democrat politicians, all Illinois judges appointed by Madigan and pretty much on the Illinois government funded pensions payroll. Period. The rest of Us are chmbolones who exist to pay for the lives and fortunes of Them. Their power was achieved through corruption, theft, larceny, lies, organized criminal activity, vote rigging and deeply anti-democratic action. “They” have no claim or right to their ill gotten income.
Absolute truth👍🏻
“Use generous amounts of honey.” JB and his buddies have already over-helped themselves to this pot of our honey. JB is not kind and does not mince words with those who oppose his whims, he does not heap honey on them.
The problem starts with the voters. I’ll bet if each one of us went out and asked ten different people (random people in your neighborhoods or families, not Wirepoints readers) what they think of Pritzker signing the new maps law, eight out of ten would have no idea what you are talking about. I think this is driven by a number of reasons, some ‘polite’, others not so ‘polite.’ If the voters don’t demand honest and better government, they will get exactly what we have. As it is, Rauner did a good job of educating anyone who would listen; the… Read more »
Exactly correct.
Good summary, and yes it’s incredibly discouraging because the only alternative at this point is to leave Illinois.
With the latest rigged maps for the Supreme Court, Illinois is now ‘hard wired’ for the extremism of Leftist Democrats, and their intolerance and hate for those who disagree with them. An economic implosion would be required to change anything. Illinois will become even more of an outlier in America.
You are truly too kind in your characterization of him.
To Illinoisians the Pritzker family name now stands for an organized crime family. Just like the Biden family name (Ukraine and China). Total scumbags.
And Pritzker’s motivation to flip-flop, lie to the citizen’s of Illinois? Say whatever it takes to get elected? Kinda like Biden did, even fooling establishment Republicans/ Uniparty types to push a ‘whisper campaign’ for him.
Well it’s too late now – the tipping point has passed. There’s no solace in saying ‘I told you so’.
Like lying to the people who vote means anything. The greatest lie told to millions of Americans, “I did not have sex with that woman, Ms Lewinski” while staring directly into a camera. Got re-elected anyway. Pritzger is just the same old same old. Dumbocrat will support him unequivocally.
Bubba lied about not keeping his wick dry. Biden and Pritzker lie about taking away people’s Constitutional rights and livelihoods while supporting those who push for Marxism. Big difference to me.
More tax (not enough) and spend (too much) democrats replacing too-many-democrats-already legislative districts. Along with gerrymandered judicial districts that’ll insure no loon-left law is obstructed, no ambulance-chasing personal injury attorney goes unrewarded, and no “person of color” criminal actually does jail time. Further, next up, a constitutional amendment that requires no Illinois job, particularly taxpayer funded public employee jobs, will be free of Marxist union control. Are we really this stupid? I guess so. No other explanation for why a citizenry already mired in a pestilential bankruptcy of finances and governance would go along with making an already intolerably bad… Read more »
No surprise that Pritzker is a lying scumbag. Remember though that Prtizker doesn’t actually think. He’s way too stupid for that and instead has political advisors who tell him what to say and what to do. He says whatever will poll well in the moment and ultimately help catapult him into the White House in 2024. After all, he has WAY more money than Michael Bloomberg and Pritzker supposes that Bloomburg got as far as he did with a way smaller fortune so JB should do even better with his gigantic trust fund.
I wish I had my barf bag handy when I read the line of WH in 2024.
Yes. It is nauseating but…..it is Pritzker’s goal. He certainly won’t achieve it but he will spend a fortune trying.
The Republicans won’t sue or go bonkers like they did in Wisconsin. They will play the Washington Generals and roll over for a few crumbs
Republicans in Illinois are weak extremely weak and of course spineless
Like little Adam Kinzinger.
Exactly. And Rodney Davis
Kinzinger turned out to be a sniveling turncoat who has betrayed the voters in his district multiple times. He wears Biden underwear to be close to his idol.
Jabba is a proven liar, as documented by his real estate tax dodging scam. No way he didn’t know what was going on, and he only paid up when he was caught red handed. He is a man without honor. So it was easy for him to sign-off on the maps, because he is used to lying. He is a pathetic individual with an ego that is larger than the man himself. Hopefully his decision to go back on his commitment will garner the attention it deserves. Voters rejected his “fair tax” because the didn’t trust him. Turns out the… Read more »
I fear with ‘Drop Box Voting’ legalized in Illinois, the Leftists Democrats in Illinois will never again lose on a statewide referendum they want.
Unbelievable time to leave the state and a good job at 55. I’ve had enough of this corruption and lies.
I am right there with you. It is time to leave this pathetic state now and let it crumble. After 30 years here I am done
I reading this from my new home inTennesee that I moved into last week My taxes went from 22k in Hinsdale to 3k. If you’re able too get the heck out now
