Chicago’s “Race-Neutral” Traffic Cameras Ticket Black and Latino Drivers the Most – ProPublica

When asked why the city expanded the program despite knowing of the racial disparities, Dan Lurie, Lightfoot’s policy chief, said the administration saw that traffic fatalities were “at epidemic levels” and that was a “deep concern” to the mayor. “We feel strongly,” he said, “that cameras are a tool in the toolkit to help alleviate that.”

First of all let me say that I am no fan of the red light/speed cans, now on with my comment. All red light and speed cameras in Chicago will now have a Ku Klux Klan hood firmly placed on top of the camera to alert drivers of the racist intent of said cameras.

There are so many things to comment on with this story, but I wanted to highlight one. In the story, there is a fellow, Rodney Perry, who is a 28 year old entrepreneur. He quit his job at a logistics firm last year to build a “digital marketing and production” company. The article says that he’s “caught up in the ‘cycle’ of ticketing.” As if he’s some sort of victim that was mercilessly picked up by the Ticket Tornado and beaten to a pulp by these cameras. Here is what the article says, interspersed with my own–albeit humble–commentary: Last year,… Read more »

Fantastic laugh out loud commentary here, love it. To answer the rhetorical questions at the end, there is a belief among far left progressives that laws that disparately affect races are unjust even if the law itself has nothing to do with race. For example, some Nevada judge last year (wrongly) held that a federal law criminalizing re-entry into the country after deportation was unconstitutional because disparately affected brown people. The US gov. pointed out that it was geography that the cause of the disparity because it was mostly Mexicans breaking the law. The law also applied to Canada but… Read more »

I’m glad someone got a laugh. I was dumbstruck by the absurdity of the article and its underlying premise. I got a glimpse of what they are teaching the SJW’s in school now. Your citation of the legal principle of Disparate Impact is right on the money. I think that the Supreme Court’s invention of this may have some very narrow application. But the absurdity of applying it to objective reality has gone way too far. It ignores the fact that there are cultural differences between races, classes, ethnicities, religions and countries causing–as you mention–antisocial behavior. I think they call… Read more »

“I think they call “following the rules” whiteness, right?” The rules itself are whiteness and whiteness is baked into the cake of every law. And if you think about it, they’re not wrong, except that whiteness is derogatory and slanderous term SJW’s use to attack prevailing American cultural values. Years ago, sociologists before they went woke described the failure to abide by these rules as anti-social behavior and noted that different communities exhibited more anti-social behavior than others. Sure it might be a cultural value to party with a Mariachi Band until 2 am in your backyard, but they likely… Read more »

The cameras function is to record the drivers actions (not their race) to determine if they were legally operating their vehicle or illegally operating their vehicle…

That’s it, nothing more…

Now, the person reviewing the the video, (determines if in fact a violation occurred & allows it go through & a ticket is issued) may have some bias, but the camera does not…

Absolutely right, but the article made a valid point that 4 lane roads with less traffic – something you see far more of on the less densely-populated Far South Side – are probably going to induce more speeding, thus more speeding tickets. And North Side roads have more speed calming measures. But the whole argument that “minorities are more likely to drive to work or drive further to get to the store, thus are more likely to get a speed camera ticket” falls flat with me. They live in a city with plenty of public transportation options. They may not… Read more »

There have been studies (can’t find them now) that say upwards of 75% of drivers in these kinds of neighborhoods lack valid licenses or current car insurance. A colleague of mine once described it as the purest form of socialism – everybody uses everybody’s cars and society at large pays the price for the accidents and injuries as a result of their bad driving. Car insurance rates in these zip codes are very expensive because so few have insurance. Ask any personal injury or criminal defense lawyer, or cop, about the almost non-existent licensing and insurance. The state used to… Read more »

Reminds me of a warning I got about riding in taxis in Indonesia. Allegedly the law there is that the passengers are liable for accidents caused by a taxi driver. For a number of reasons, most drivers can’t afford insurance. Passengers “direct” the driver so they are liable. Thus, the advice: if your taxi is in an accident exit the cab immediately and beat feet.

It’s not fckn racism, it’s climate change! The cameras don’t respond well to shiney cars.

Maybe these racist cameras need to undergo some equity/sensitivity training…

It would be interesting to see what the zip codes of drivers and where they got their tickets. I’d wager many white drivers avoid black neighborhoods, so any camera there is going to disproportionately impact black drivers.

Yes, most white people avoid back neighborhoods. Along this point, last fall, I evesdropped on a conversation of some traveling salesman standing behind me at a wedding a few month ago; he sold bulk PPE products (hand sanitizer, masks, gloves, shields, etc) in non-medical settings and his territory, as a nearing middle aged white guy was the south side of Chicago. He said the only businesses that bought PPE were rehab facilities, food pantries, homeless shelters, and stuff like that. He said, in the most matter of the fact way, that everywhere he went he experienced outright racism, unrelenting racism… Read more »

Just do some research on whites killed by blacks, the numbers are staggering. Then do the same except check out blacks killed by whites, no comparison. Another story of hatred and racism ignored by the media.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
