HB2775 bans discrimination in housing selection based on source of income, including non-employment income such as Section 8 vouchers or disability payments.
As a full time landlord in Peoria I have some of my properties on section 8 (hud wants it call housing choice voucher now a days) there are some advantages to the program. the direct deposit is never late. If the tenant damages stuff that shouldn’t be damaged (broken windows, ripped screens, holes in wall doors) they are required to fix them at their annual inspection. there are some issues with the program too. Pretty short article lacking in details. My understanding of Section 8 is that the house/apartment must meet some standards such as no cracked windows, carpet must be of a minimum quality etc. In addition the landlord needs to get it certified. If it’s not certified how can they force you to accept a Section 8 tenant??????
I had the same concern. Are they going to force prospective apartments to undergo section 8 certification? I don’t think they can do that. This is more of a virtue signal.
I think now though a landlord can’t turn down an unemployed applicant solely because their sources of income are child support or government benefits. I have relatives on SSDI and not all landlords will accept tenants in scenarios like this.

People value what they’ve worked for – no effort on their part often equals no stewardship and irresponsible behavior. Section 8 can be a landlord’s nightmare.
If this bill passes, say goodbye to local control over all Illinois parks and expect to see open drug and alcohol use, needles, no sanitation and fire hazards, but no ordinary park users.
