“We’ve heard from [workers],” state Sen. Ram Villivalam, one of the bill’s sponsors, said. “They need this legislation. They need this safety net...That is just something that they’re asking for, and quite frankly, they deserve.”
I know a few states already have this. Two that I know of, OR and CO, charge a specific tax. CO is ,9%, half employee, half employer. So Yay, more taxes,

IL pols’ solution to the cavernous hole of debt they’ve dug is to keep digging. This strategy is familiar to those who mismanage taxpayer funds.

They “need ” to get their useless carcasses back to work!
Yes. Those lazy pregnant ladies need to give birth and then right back to work. Enough of their goldbricking.

I think some may miss the point of this article. The proposed legislation doesn’t require employers to pay for the mandated 26 week paid vacation, it requires Illinois taxpayers to pay for it. It’s a “state” entitlement eligibility program. Good thing Illinois has lots of taxpayer dollars laying about looking for something to do. And, of course, we can count on nothing but good results from the state agency put in charge of all this. Likely either DHS’s Health and Family Services, who’ve turned Medicaid-n-Snap into a fraud and waste Democratic vote-buying machine, or the Illinois Department of Employment Security,… Read more »
Of course the Illinois taxpayers have plenty of money tp be distributed to the gimme some o dat group in Illinois. The voters seem to love things like this
While I have not read the bill, I don’t think it’s all that clear from the article that this is a state-funded program. See the following: “Tasha Brown, the Midwest director with the Small Business Majority, said this will help small businesses that might not have the resources to offer paid leave to their workers… “That’s why it’s so important that state lawmakers enact policies and programs to support and empower these entrepreneurs, helping them provide paid leave as a benefit to their employees,” Brown said.” This is not to say that there wouldn’t be a giant state bureaucracy full… Read more »
“The proposal, called the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Act, which would be operated by the state, would give anyone who is pregnant an additional 26 weeks of leave.”
Is this paid leave or just job protection? Sorry I don’t have time or energy to find or read the bill. But if it’s paid leave, are you saying the payments are made by the state without financial input by employers? Or is it designed like workers comp?

This must be a joke. If it is true, kiss all business goodbye. The only jobs will be government lackies. PPF will still have a job, let him be a slave to the poor left in Illinois.

Sure. By all means. They need it and deserve it. The workers have spoken. Must be a human right. Not sure how it became the employers’ problem, however. Can the state legislature “impair” existing employment contracts or union contracts which already prescribe compensation and benefits? Or dictate the terms of every future contract? Would this trump worker compensation and minimum wage laws? What about due process in taking employers’ money without “just compensation?” Or is this just a ploy to soften everyone up for the “paid time off” law that’s already been proposed?

Why only 26 weeks? Make it 52 weeks, so we can clear out all those nasty capitalists.

So here ya go. On other threads here there is considerable disappointment regarding the pension benefits that State workers get. At the same time the legislators even more costly benefits for the employees. My guess is that the legislators recognize this will generate plenty of votes on their next election from the employees and at the same time be ignored by the large amounts from those too lazy to vote. Prove me wrong…I don’t think you can

I most certainly like the family friendly idea but who is going to pay for 26 weeks of leave?
If this bill passes, say goodbye to local control over all Illinois parks and expect to see open drug and alcohol use, needles, no sanitation and fire hazards, but no ordinary park users.

somebody has to do the work that would have been done by the person taking 26 weeks of vacation

Any privately employed resident of Illinois….
