Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. One thing I really miss about the Detroit of my youth was the old 4% sales tax. In Chicago it’s 10.25% and you’ll get a nasty look if you don’t tip 20%.
30% of a restaurant bill is for what exactly.
Most of my neighborhood mom & pop restaurants are barely in business as is, dotted amongst a forest of empty storefronts that are unrentable. This crazy bill will just sink them for good. One wonders if it’s the Illinois Trial Lawyers Acc that dreams up these crazy bills looking for $big$ lawsuit payouts to enforce.
I don’t doubt for a minute that there are lots of lawyers-n-law firms that have figured more ways out than we can imagine to enrich themselves from these laws. However I think the bigger reason is that the progressive-n-woke Dem cabal have identified tipped-employees as one of their working class “victims” that needs their “support.” Which is to say, a group of people they’ve decided to exploit. I wonder how many of us have worked for tips at some point in their lives. I have. Paid for my college and a nice one bedroom apartment with $311 a month in… Read more »
Back in the day when the paperboy was a boy and delivered the Detroit Free Press via bicycle and actually collected once per week in person, Old Joe would get tips for his outstanding reliable service. X-mas was the high point of the year. Once I got a $5 tip when you could actually buy something for $5!
“We know that 27,000 left during the pandemic,” Pacione-Zayas reported. Cause the restaurant they worked at got shut down you idiot. Giddyap is spot on, these dopes couldn’t manage a lemonade stand. I’d like to see just one legislator summarize all the rules, regulations and laws that a restaurant needs to comply with, bet they can’t do it.
When everything is “racism” nothing is “racism.”
You know what’s really “racism”? Killing jobs for minorities, with regulations that are all about virtue signaling, and have no real world benefit to anyone.
Just the latest example of Illinois Democrats’ business hostile laws chasing away businesses and jobs. This is what happens when laws affecting business are written by dopes who couldn’t manage a lemonade stand.
Spot on. The left’s policies are a curse on minorities.
You’d be really wise to team up with some local restaurants and print their stories. You’ll hear how employees stayed home because COVID pay was more than they would get from working. You’ll hear about onerous rules and forced lockdowns that made retaining servers impossible. You’ll hear about lost revenue, and so much more!
True. I have spoken to some of them and they said precisely that. Some don’t want to talk on record for fear of the usual reprisals.
