Chicago spent at least $3.5 million for NASCAR weekend and got $620,000 in return – Chicago Tribune/MSN

Cars compete during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Grant Park on July 2, 2023, in Chicago. The $3.5 million figure for police overtime and construction stands in contrast to the $620,000 NASCAR paid: a base $500,000 permit fee a final check for nearly $120,000 to pay the city its portion of ticket sales as well as commissions for food, beverage and merchandise, according to city records. Said Mayor Brandon Johnson, “We’ve seen the fact that it was the most well-televised event, and that’s in spite of the rain. And, you know, many of the economic benefits that we’ve experienced, and even with very extreme weather there, it was still net positive.”

Not that I really care if the Bears play here but it makes you wonder why they can’t get a good deal. They’re inept on the field and I assume inept at the bargaining table.

Everyone in the sports business knows Lori Lightwieght got duped by this deal. She was so eager to get a headline deal done she didn’t do her homework, assigned only her know-nothing staff to handle it and didn’t even consult with the half dozen or more cities that have done a similar event. Just all around total incompetence.
