Commentary: Michigan Avenue, once a picture-perfect postcard, is now a depressing mess – Chicago Sun-Times

Police stand near pedestrians on the sidewalk at night."Post-COVID, the avenue has perked up, and I have come to appreciate its mix of characters and activity — and its reminder of Chicago’s intractable problems: homelessness, mental illness, a preposterously wide income gap."

The whole country is becoming ugly. Name one big city that is getting more beautiful? The field of architecture has also gone down the tubes, there are no longer any architects it seems that can design beautiful buildings and surroundings. Our country is beginning to look like an aging strip mall. Beauty is important, very important, when beauty ceases in our cities people no longer care, everything becomes disposable. EV cars are the next big thing that will be disposable in our society, like cell phones, throw the old one away every few years. The opposite of “sustainability”.

3 wig shops, 2 nail salons, a fish store and MBC storefront church, Michigan Ave is thriving!

Not sure why this Liberal Democrat is complaining about most of the Mag Mile being a hellhole – Pritzker, Lightfoot, and the rest of the Leftist Democrats worked hard for this outcome.

When I worked in a downtown office, I remember telling my coworker from rural Wisconsin to ditch her Coach purse, hide valuables/credit card/train pass/IDs in an inside pocket. Don’t carry what you don’t need. I used to hide my keys, rings in a zipper pocket of my shoe–loved those shoes. (Oh yeah, women–always wear running shoes to and from work.) Coworker didn’t listen to me. Her purse was snatched and she lost her drivers license, train pass, and that beautiful Coach purse. And she had to cancel the credit cards and monitor for ID theft. Welcome to Chicago!

I was an infrequent downtown visitor. Having grown up in the city, I figured the Chicago of the early 2000s was the,Chicago I left behind. Wrong. Arrived near my destination and began walking to my appointment. A few moments later a black woman approached me and cautioned me about the area and pointed out some young black she thought were targeting me. She offered to walk with me and instructed me on keeping my briefcase and bag between us as we walked. Side-by-side we walked safely to my destination. Good woman – she helped a suburban rube avoid becoming a… Read more »

Brandon’s “ rich, diverse tapestry “ of homeless people, thugs shooting at each other and robbing people on EL trains along with shuttered stores shoplifted out of business and filth everywhere is not for everyone. Takes a special type to appreciate that coat of many colors.

The Democratic Party can stand back and enjoy what they have created. Nice job ! The “ usual gang of idiots “ have and are continuing to destroy a former great city. Denials by chief democrats will not change What our eyes see. What used to power our state now draws from the rest of the state. Chicago is a giant leach sucking the rest of us Like a vacuum cleaner on high directly into Our wallets. If you don’t want to stay leave, I have, otherwise the criminals, low life’s, Just plain run of the mill crazy people will… Read more »

Yes, I used to work downtown too. But that was years ago. Don’t miss the miserable, expensive commute. What a waste of time!
Now I’m president of the I HATE CHICAGO club. Membership is growing fast.

Imagine wanting to live off Michigan Ave these days. They’re as crazy as the vagrants!

Yeah, it’s all over now, as vacant office buildings are being converted to section 8 housing. There’s no looking back from that decision. Once great cities across the country will collapse under progressive policies.
