Rhetoric is easy. Facts are hard. – Wirepoints

It’s easy to spew rhetoric. To push anecdotes. To manipulate emotions. It’s what much of journalism does these days.

But it’s another thing to write the truth – and to be able to defend it with facts and data. It’s what we strive to do every day at Wirepoints.

To write a truthful story we need to invest a lot of time and effort into research and fact checking. And it’s not just the first layer of an argument we have to get right…the second and third layers also matter. It’s why we’re able to make bold, credible claims.

But doing all that takes resources. Our work can only happen with the financial support of our readers. Please consider supporting our efforts with a tax-deductible donation.

Your support does more than just help us tell the facts. It also inspires Illinoisans to do more.

Take our research on Illinois’ K-12 illiteracy. It created such a splash that the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, in its piece titled Illinois’ Shocking Report Card, promoted our work to its nationwide audience. That, in turn, motivated one reader from a major downstate city to take action: “The WSJ article was the impetus for my running for and winning a seat on the school board. I was embarrassed for my city and Illinois.”

The traditional media may be content to parrot the rhetoric and distractions of Illinois’ ruling class, but we’re not. We’re committed to telling the truth.

And the more the truth gets out, the closer we get to turning Illinois around. Join us by supporting our work.

Regards,

Ted Dabrowski & Mark Glennon

I simply notice people posting comments here that clearly have done their homework. Ted, Mark and crew have been the crucial facilitators in getting facts out. Discussing uncomfortable issues to bring clarity and reality back to the people. Ive told so many people about WP. Its optimism and an obvious sense of fight that brings me to this place.

This article looks a lot like a letter I wrote last night to the Chicago Tribune referring to an article pushing for additional diesel pollution regulations. Their article contained one anecdote after the next, but no data or references to studies to provide support for the need for additional regulation; just a collection to sentimental stories.

We contribute monthly – just a subscription on our credit card.

It’s comforting to have access to a fact-based news source … and a chance to read and contribute reader commentary.

Thank you!

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
