Meta and Constellation sign 20-year nuclear power deal in Illinois to power AI – CBS2 (Chicago)

Constellation's Clinton Clean Energy Center was actually slated to close in 2017 after years of financial losses, but was saved by legislation in Illinois establishing a zero-emission credit program to support the plant into 2027. The agreement deal takes effect in June of 2027, when the state's taxpayer funded zero-emission credit program expires. With the arrival of Meta, Clinton's clean energy output will expand by 30 megawatts, preserve 1,100 local jobs and bring in $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, according to the companies.

Another financial misstep on the backs of taxpayers. We are improving the capability for tech companies, that have plenty of money and should be shouldering this cost. We have a governor that clearly cannot negotiate, as evidenced by the $19 BILLION INCREASE in the state budget since he took office in 2019. The article also points out that “financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.” Of course not, because we would all likely become ill reading through the details.

The power purchase deal Microsoft signed with Constellation Energy in 2024 for the TMI Unit 1 nuke output for 20 years was over $100/MWh. Way above market prices for that time period. I’m guessing the Meta deal with Constellation Energy for the Clinton nuke output will be in the same price range. So no Microsoft is not getting a “deal” from Illinois but instead is helping keep a zero carbon nuke plant running for the next 20 years.
