Chicago aims to reenact grocery tax; suburbs consider sales tax hikes – Center Square

Among them, Naperville officials said the state’s move to eliminate the grocery tax would leave the city with a potential $6.1 million budget hole. The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce presented three options on its website earlier this week: re-enacting the grocery tax, raising the home rule sales tax by 0.25 percent, or reducing programs and services, which “could include staff layoffs.”

Isn’t this a no brainer? The entire state was paying the grocery tax before Gov Pritzker repealed this tax so he could claim he reduced taxes! Slick! Add the tax. The monies will stay in each community.

Completely agree. On top of that, 26% of our population is getting their health care through medicaid and around 38% of this population is obese. Why shouldn’t we tax food based on the nutrition of the item? Fruits, veggies, meats, etc… zero tax. Processed foods, snacks, ice cream etc… charge 10%. We tax weed and alcohol at high rates. Why are we giving these other foods a pass when they have very little nutritional value? They are “recreational” food items. A luxury. This would need to be done at a state level though. Naperville could put a dent in their shortfall by getting those that want to do away with drag queens reading to kids at the library and giving trans athletes their own sports competitions a chance to contribute $5 each, anonymously of course.

Gas at Kwik Trip in Brodhead, WI is $2.999 – IL stations near the border are $3.459.

No brainer.

I guess if your time isn’t worth anything to you then it may make sense. For everyone else it would be a massive waste of time.

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
