Editorial: Before adding new rules on homelessness, let’s enforce the ones we have – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

Tents sit near a burned section of ground in a homeless person encampment in Legion Park in the North Park neighborhood on March 4, 2026. (Eileen T. Meslar/Chicago Tribune)"The uncomfortable tension here is that this bill prioritizes the rights of unsheltered individuals without equally addressing the effects on other people who use public spaces ..."

All too many homeless are veterans. Also, many have mental issues and addiction issues. They are destined to live a hard short life. I have met some that came from very good and rich families.

For people as useless and dumb as Illinoisans, loading your parks and public spaces with derelicts is perfectly appropriate and while you’re at it throw in a tax increase or two. You vote for it. You deserve it.

The children infesting the Tribune now whine that their favorite coffee shop might be buried behind sidewalk tents. Their sensible shoes will crunch used needles as they waddle down the sidewalk from their Prius to the door, dodging panhandlers and pickpockets all the way.

JB the Hutt’s new initiative to excuse and encourage deviancy invalidates vagrancy laws, all to the detriment of those who play by the rules and take responsibility for themselves. That’s the whole point that the urchins at the Trib missed. Please forgive the Useless Chicago Media members, as they are genuinely stupid.

I think there are better approaches than sacrificing what precious enjoyable space we have, especially with the plethora of abandoned property available to repurpose.

Many workers are only 1 or 2 pay checks from being homeless themselves. We should learn to be much more compassionate. Living on the streets is a very hard life.

The asylums of old are the homeless encampments of today.

The right question to ask is, why do we have so many homeless people? We should have none.

Some of the homeless do not want to live under “other peoples” rules. They want to come and go as they please, do whatever they like to do, and invite others to come into their living space. So if you have a shelter or home with regulations they won’t stay there long. They value their freedom more than your shelter.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
