Constitutional tests await IL Dems’ race-based district plan – Legal Newsline

Legal challenges would likely argue Illinois Democrats can't use the state constitution to sidestep the U.S. Constitution's prohibition on so-called racial gerrymandering. Essentially, Illinois and others have so far been allowed to use the race of voters to draw districts, so long as race was just one of the factors used, and not the predominant factor guiding the making of the map.

SCOTUS just shot this idea out of the water, holding that race cannot be used to draw Congressional districts:

The ruling could also be used to challenge current racially gerrymandered districts in Illinois

Redrawing districts etc. are all slick political maneuvers, yet in the end if all of those tired of blue politicians and their inane policies vote against them, that will be the salvation of IL. Nothing else will change things.
