New data: Illinois homeowners pay country’s highest property taxes – Illinois Policy

In 2011 Illinois enacted the largest income tax hike in state history. At least some of that increase could have offset rising property taxes, but instead the state kept 100 percent of the additional money, decreasing the percentage given to local governments. Since Gov. JB Pritzker took office, total property taxes in Illinois have risen 27 percent, from $31.8 billion in 2018 to $40.37 billion in 2024.

JB has risen the state budget 20% on EACH TERM, I suspect the same on next.

I wouldn’t doubt it. Inflation alone should cause a large increase in spending.

Two-thirds of my property tax goes to the school district. The school district I’m in has had a steady declining enrollment for years, yet the same staffing still. Also the school district has plenty of taxpayer money to pay all of the teachers required pension contribution, plus state of the art HS athletic facilities, and on and on. There is absolutely no meaningful accountability in the school district for spending control. Pritzker and the supermajority Democrats could have easily provided leadership to control K-12 spending and thus hold the line on property taxes.

There is meaningful accountability. It’s the municipal elections that come every two years where only 20% of the city votes, and 90% of them are hard core far-far-far left progressives. So they win.

With the deficits at the State and City level and soon to be the county level, they are obviously not high enough. Since most lemmings are not particularly upset, they can and must go much higher. Don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause. You know the kids. Yeah, the kids that can’t read or write at grade level which is most of them.
