Much of the routine trade and investment between China and America is entirely appropriate and in America’s interest. But inserting the Chinese Communist Party into America’s pay-to-play system and its economic development strategy isn’t just crossing a line. It’s a leap into an abyss of stupidity.

The linked article says “Joana Colussi, a research assistant professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University, citing Purdue data. ‘Eighty percent of the farmers in the Midwest, they rent the land.’” I can’t find anything in the Purdue data supporting this. US Census of Agriculture 2022 says less than 50% of Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa farms have any land rental expenses at all. (Of course those who own land might have overextended themselves).
It’s probably true that both comments are right or close to it at least, and that one writer’s search criterion was simply different than the other’s. You may be thinking, perhaps, that the statement refers only to people who have rental contracts in their operations. There may well be some that operate that way, but there are LOTS more IL farmers who have landlords who want different kinds of contracts that avoid the cash-certain concept of the word “rent.” Each such contract offers/requires some “skin in the game” terms that require the property owner to participate in the costs of… Read more »
