A Promising Violence Prevention Program In Chicago Faces A Massive Budget Setback – Block Club Chicago

Gillian Darlow, the president of the Polk Bros. Foundation and one of READI’s funders, said the recent funding commitments by city and county governments were a step in the right direction, but acknowledged that anti-violence programs still need more financial support. “I see all of those entities’ budget contracts, and sources of revenue threatened, and I don’t know how that’s going to play out."

I can’t find the organization on Guidestar directory of charities. I’d be interested to know the salaries of the CEO or executive director and whether he/she has continued to draw that salary in full during the pandemic. Also, how much of their “service” is provided through volunteers vs paid staff. Without pre-judging, I generally try to find these details about a charity before supporting them and I’d welcome a link to READI’s budget details.

Me either. Check out the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Rights. Seems like READI might be a program under their non-profit.

http://www.heartlandalliance.org/readi. Researching Illinois charitable organizations would be much easier if the Illinois Attorney General would post state mandated charitable organization filings on its website instead of hiding them from the public. For example the state mandates that charitable organizations file the AG990-IL Charitable Organization Annual Report with the Illinois Attorney General’s office. But the AG does not post the filings on its website. http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/charities/ag990-annualreport.pdf http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/charities/register_report.html The AG could voluntarily do so, but since it hasn’t, another route is to pass a state law mandating the Attorney General post the filings on its website. As an analogy, public sector collective bargaining… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
