Right now I may have $5,000 in credit card obligations, but when I pay the $5K when it is due, my ‘credit card debt’ goes to zero.
I’d be curious to know if the $5K figure is a carried balance OR a current obligation.
There’s a big difference between what you owe and what you carry month-to-month.

It’s likely a carried balance. But the amount is kind of misleading because it’s not at all even distributed. The article sort of explains this: Data showed that people 35 or younger have the lowest average credit card debt at $3,700. Around 48% of individuals in this age group carry debt. Adults 75 or older have the highest average credit card debt at $8,100, but just 28% of people in this age group have debt.

It’s a small number of people with high balances that skew the average for everyone.
