Can The Google Effect Revive The Loop? Experts Say Yes – Block Club Chicago

The arrival of Google and TIF subsidies for residential conversions have signaled that the city is betting on Downtown revitalization, said Michael Fassnacht, chief growth officer at Clayco construction firm and former CEO of World Business Chicago. Chicago has been recognized as offering some of the “most generous subsidies” in the United States, according to the Wall Street Journal, and developers have taken note.

Maybe taxpayer-funded subsidies should include armed guards walking workers from the Metra to their downtown Chicago offices and back. Also, have armed guards wherever workers eat lunch outside in warmer weather.

If crime weren’t so bad the “most generous subsidies” wouldn’t be needed and the subsidy could be used to fund a real municipal need.

I sure hope so. They have to solve the crime problem first. If you do not feel safe all the money in the world is not enough.

The Google tech nerds are in no way prepared to face the criminal element downtown.
They should all watch The Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Heston’s character had to make it back to his urban fortress every day before sunset, because after dark all the murderous zombies came out. This movie is a horror classic. And the city in the movie could be modern day Chicago.
