The alders' idea is to move almost all city departments back to their budget allocation from 2020, but to add an inflation adjustment. If this happened, the alders claim, the city would city over $500 million this year. "We don't want a city shutdown, but the mayor is making us choose between a property tax increase or a city shutdown," Ald. Silvana Tabares said. "Those are the options that he is giving us, and that's not what we want."
We are in desperate need of an IL version of ‘DOGE’…

I hate the stupidity of the ‘alders’ meaning change. It’s the dumbest thing ever. The word ealdormann comes from old English, nearly 1,5000 years ago, and ealdor mean Patriarch and mann obviously means man, but meant “elders of the clan or tribe” as “mann” meant all people. The word eventually became to mean a specific a government position for a man or woman. The morons in charge of Chicago’s city council are so stupid, they call themselves “alders” which mean PATRIARCH, the definition of which is “a male leader”. These goofs wanted to become gender neutral and inclusive yet end… Read more »

Need to right size the payroll first. My former neighbor is a Streets and San supervisor, making almost 160K a year. That’s not a skilled trade. You don’t serve an apprenticeship for 4 years learning how to dial a phone until you become a journeyman. Fat John should make no more than 45-50K.
With passage of Amendment 1, for all practical purposes, Fat John’s deal is set in stone, his contracted job– can’t be replaced with someone paid less, work responsibilities & staffing can’t be changed, and most importantly his job can’t be contracted out to private company. Chump taxpayers are simply stuck with 3 guy’s per Streets & San refuse truck making over +$100gs, etc (the contracted WM recycler has ONE guy per truck in my neighborhood). I’m not even sure Fat John can be laid-off?……EQUITY!!!!
With passage of Amend 1, are benifocen overlord’s have 100% Elon/Vivak-DOGE proofed Chicago & Illinois from even a hint of cost efficiency for all are Fat John heroes.

With passage of Amendment 1, will it be easy or even possible to lay-off city employees covered by a union contracts? Look instead for a lot of administrative staff to get axed and a lot of COVID funded programs like– non-profits, violence interrupters, guaranteed income programs, etc. Watch as all social equity funding stuff is first to get the axe…..what’s equity hustler CTU/Brandon to do?
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
