Some automakers plan to remove AM radio from new electric vehicles, but a number of legislators and the broadcast industry are pushing to pass a bill that would keep AM radio in cars. The issue will impact drivers in Chicago — a market with among the most AM-loyal listeners in the country. The city has a decadeslong tradition of local programming, and thanks to its central location and stations with 50,000-watt signals spanning most of the country at night, Chicago’s voice has been widely heard since radio was invented.
Streaming AM radio from the phone to the car stereo really, really sucks. iheartradio has captured most of the radio streaming market, and unfortunately, they destroy the stream by inserting their own commercials and trailers into the broadcast above and beyond the local commercials. For example, there are 90 seconds of commercials when you load up WLS’s stream on iheartradio, regardless of whether the terrestrial stations is on a commercial break or not. iheartradio also inserts their own 90 to 120 second commercial break at the end of the terrestrial station’s regular commercial break, so you miss the first two… Read more »

An aftermarket for AM radios will spring up if this happens to fill the vacuum.
There will, be a huge=comeback, rebound for pocket size AM transistor radios, junk! I’ve got AM radio in my car, somewhere. All I listen to is the music on my phone. I don’t think listening to the news and driving while really pisded off is good. I wait until8 get home and open my iPad to watch the latest clownery
