A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
The city is taxing women for being afraid to ride public transit after dark. For many women, it’s the “last mile” – that walk from the bus or train stop to their destination – where they are most concerned for their safety. And now they will pay extra.
Well maybe these women of loose morals shouldn’t be out after dark. The extra surcharge should hopefully discourage some of them from strumpeting around town.
I’m just kidding of course. The purpose of this tax is specifically designed to tax ‘rich’ people because rich people use ride share more than other demographics.
Doesnt the ride hailing tax revenue go to cta– with its plummeting ridership and to pay for cta pensions (that none of us or riders will could ever dream of).
Will they tax “Thumbing a Lift” and/or just giving a ride to a friend or family member to a doctors office or shopping? In California you get a fine for driving alone in the carpool lane. Soon in Illinois you’ll get a fine for HAVING a carpool without a license and getting a fine for driving alone WITHOUT a carpool.

Wonder how city go about determining if the ride was within downtown zone or not?
Tracking, of course! This is merely a precursor to tracking – and taxing – vehicles driving in and out of downtown. The city tries to make life as onerous as possible for residents of cook county and beyond who need to get into the city limits.
Knowing how greedy government is I wouldn’t be surprised to see the highest tax imposed on all rides and then force Uber to prove which rides are eligible for lower taxes and apply for refunds
