City commission approves $98 million in TIF funds for massive LaSalle Street renovation – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

The funds would help help developers transform vacant floors in a 44-story tower at 135 S. LaSalle St. into hundreds of apartments and other uses, possibly including a neighborhood grocery store or full-service health club.

I worked in this building for years. It’s totally unsuitable for apartment living. Most of the floors get no sun, just like most buildings in the LaSalle St. canyon. I worked on a “remodeled” floor, and the bathrooms were the original ones from the 1930’s, including all of the porcelain fixtures. This is an old building. $98 million will cover nothing. They’re going to have to spend hundreds of millions to rehab this building, and it’s destined to turn into a public housing project building. Which is obviously the plan.
