CPS finds buyers for 3 closed schools, but repurposing remains a challenge – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

There were 46 buildings left vacant following Chicago’s mass school closures in 2013. Twelve years later, more than two dozen properties remain vacant; Most are still managed by Chicago Public Schools, racking up millions in upkeep costs each year — between $75,000 and $150,000 per property.

What the Tribune failed to point out is that CPS forbids any unneeded school building to be sold and then used…as a school. You read that right – a building built as a school cannot be used as a school by any private or charter operator. So stop moaning about how you can’t sell your buildings, just sell them to the highest bidder in the fiscally responsible way.
