Declining enrollment in Chicago Public Schools could lead to crisis if unchecked, report says – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

The district’s diminished student roster isn’t the crux of the problem, according to Hal Woods, chief policy officer at Kids First Chicago. “What makes this a crisis is the lack of a serious plan for how to adapt to it. That leaves students in smaller schools with fewer opportunities and no clear path forward,” he said.

There’s been a massive drop off in fertility among younger people, especially in large blue cities. Women in their 30’s in the US have a fertility rate on par with South Korea, it’s that bad. Declining enrollment is everywhere, and the bad school districts will feel it the most acutely.

You know how Chicago will handle this under Mayor Brandon Johnson. Chicago public schools will increase the number of staff they have and increase their pay to boot, at the the same time enrolment and student achievement will decline. It’s the Chicago Way!

Public Employment Law Number 30 May 2004: “[A] local government may breach a contract for an important public purpose … Article I, Section 10, of the U.S. Constitution, the “Contract Clause,” says, “No state shall . . . pass any . . . law impairing the Obligation of Contracts.” This clause is applicable not only to state governments but also to local governments and other political subdivisions of the state.18 It is not, however, an absolute prohibition. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that a state may pass legislation or take other official action that impairs its contracts without violating the… Read more »

Stacey Gates would NEVER send her children to public schools.

People are free to spend their money on private school if they so choose. Nothing wrong with that.

You are correct, but it does show her faith in the CPS. If I went to a restaurant that the owner would not eat at, I would question whether I should eat there too.

Her confidence has nothing to do with the chef and everything to do with the patrons of the restaurant. It’s the same reason people who can afford it, move out of the hood. It isn’t so much the location of the land as much as it’s the people that live around you.

Declining enrollment? Oh we’re gonna need millions, no make that billions and 3 cents, to deal with it. Because you can never give CPS and the CTU too much money.

Very interesting story, especially given the efforts by CTU to combat all forms of competition to public schools. Black and Latino parents seem to be making a choice for their children and that choice is to avoid CPS.

Do you know what the problem really is ? We all know about it. Read about it. But NO one does a fricking thing about it. We elect these mutts to protect us ,the voters, and they protect the unions that back their campaigns . Instead our taxes go up . WAKE UP PEOPLE. WE NEED CHANGE

Hey Tribune – if you haven’t noticed, CPS is always in Crisis. It is funny/sad that in this article there is this line – “The arrival of nearly 9,000 migrant students in recent years helped to offset short-term enrollment decreases, but has since leveled off, the report said.” The arrival of 9,000 migrant kids into the education system “helped”, even though their parents have likely not paid a dime in taxes to cover their children’s costs. This position of simply filling the schools and collecting the per-student tax dollars…should not be the focus. Exploring the reasons for decline of enrollment… Read more »

The Tribune may not have noticed the constant crisis at CPS, but it looks like concerned parents have. On their current course the Chicago Public schools will collapse. Ignorant and unskilled graduates become unemployable dependents on a welfare state. No concerned working parent wants that for their children.

No parent wants that for their children. Teachers and their unions should be just as concerned about creating their own rivals for public funds instead of productive citizens who will pay taxes. It’s stunning they apparently can’t see that they are digging themselves a very deep hole. Yay Stacy, she gets results for teachers!

“Matriculating at CPS”? Are you kidding me? What goes on at CPS can, in no way, be called matriculating. Warehousing, feeding, babysitting maybe. But matriculating? What a laugh. CTU, demographics, CPS bureaucracy, no reading, no math, demorat boondoggles and thieving, yes. Matriculating, No. The whole district and system is an abject failure and train wreck. The solution is simple, but impossible given the corruption and idiocy of demorat rule. Let me state this clearly and emphatically, IT CAN”T BE FIXED! It can only be destroyed and then possibly rebuilt but that is not going to happen with what you geniuses… Read more »

CPS needs to grow a spine stand up to CTU. Close underutilized schools and lay off associated staff. Then use saved resources on the students. There is no justification for additional spending with declining enrollment. CPS needs to improve education and raise student test scores. CPS represents students, not CTU. CPS need to be financially responsible.

Time to close low utilized schools and actually FIRE and huge surplus of UNION MEMBERS!
