Editorial: An Illinois bag fee wouldn’t fix Springfield’s spending problem – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

"If it passes, House Bill 5112 would impose a carryout bag fee of $0.10 on each carryout bag starting Jan. 1, 2027. Ten cents is just the beginning. This fee would rise annually until it reaches 25 cents in 2030. But even that limit can increase 'if certain goals are not met,' meaning hikes would continue until bag usage drops to 90 percent below 2027 levels statewide, according to our reading of the legislation."

The bag tax won’t but the cemetery taxing districts will. Cemetery board of directors, all appointed of course, will ensure the voting rights of the cemetery voters.

Tax the plastic bags and they will all go our the window when I’m driving.
State can hire more union workers to go pick them up, a win win for this Democratic state!

2 cents each per 1000 bags. It isn’t A tax , its a fine for using them.

During the Covid days many stores in my area prohibited carry in reusable bags. Just think under some future edict of Pritzker you may be forced to pay a bag tax like it or not and the so called “we are saving the planet from plastic bags” was just a ruse.

It’s a far left liberal idea originating with progressive think tanks and evangelized by bluesky and twitter influencers before landing on the courthouse steps. Living in a progressive world is one step away from living in hell

I will bring boxes like at Aldi to put my groceries in if the stores don’t like it I will just put them in the shopping cart.

It amuses me that polls show IL voters main concern is an affordability crisis. How many taxes have been raised in IL lately? Gas taxes, streaming taxes, social media taxes, sin taxes, gambling taxes, cell phone taxes. Increased electricity and natural gas prices because of climate concerns. Now, a bag tax? The joke about taxing the air you breathe doesn’t seem so far fetched. How much of the affordability crisis is due to those small little insidious unavoidable taxes raised on so many facets of your life? Very hard to quantify, but very real.
