Mayor Lori Lightfoot backed the law, calling it a needed tool to protect workers in Chicago, many of whom earn the city’s minimum wage and fear losing their jobs if they cannot take on additional shifts at their managers’ request. However, the law was blasted by business groups as an expensive mandate that would hurt businesses struggling to stay afloat.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
