Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. I use to live in a neighborhood that had a community crime watch. The police told us to call the regular police number if you saw anything suspicious or people who did not look like they belonged in the neighborhood. It was very effective at reducing crime to near zero. I agree with the UofC asian students – security means armed checkpoints around campus given the violence that has happened.
People need to get CC, particularly if you are Asian. That’s our reality, if you wish to survive here in Chicago. Otherwise leave. The road out is well worn.
I saw some links to tweets from a U of C graduate student who attended that townhall safety meeting. This white liberal soy boy was appalled that the primarily asian student population wanted more police, more random stops, more cameras, more proactive enforcement. Didn’t the asian population understand this was a step backwards from abolition (of prisons and police, of course). The dude went almost into seizures on his twitter feed when one asian student suggested that police erect physical barriers to prevent people who don’t belong on campus from coming on campus! how could these students be so racist!!!… Read more »
It’s amazing! I love it, put up barriers or fences to enclose the neighborhood. I’ve found Asian thinking well grounded in logic regardless. They recognize the problem and present simple solutions. How is the Windbag factory going to address these concerns? Maybe a blue ribbon inclusive commission!
UoChicago administration has its long-established own large police force, blue-light call-boxes, and whistle patrol, but still refuses to acknowledge that their largely naive student-body is very vulnerable to being victimized by street-crime and property-theft/burglary. Administrators carefully avoid discussions regarding who those aggressors are, and how/if students can protect themselves (even if it makes them look “racist”).
Chinese and other Asian international students are far less likely to fear “racist” label, and are willing to call-out administrators on their hypocrisy and intentional neglect of students’ safety.
