IL taxpayers provide millions for upcoming NASCAR, golf events – Center Square

The $55.2 billion Illinois budget signed by Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday includes $5 million to Chicago for costs associated with operating expenses for NASCAR races July 5 and 6. State Sen. Don DeWitte noted that lawmakers also appropriated $1 million for 2026 Presidents Cup golf at Medinah Country Club and suggested that there were much more significant priorities for the state.

Instead, open up the NASCAR track in Joliet that Pritzker shut down.

I watched last year’s. Cars going 40 mph into tire barricades as they couldn’t handle the turns. Night fall causing the race to get cut short. Empty bleacher seats because of their cost. Another financial fiasco for our fair city

NASCAR has a perfectly good track to run races on in Joliet (Chicagoland Speedway) that hasn’t held a NASCAR race since 2019. It has:

  • Plenty of parking, meaning that fans can camp and tailgate
  • Plenty of seats

But there’s probably not enough chance for graft (AND NASCAR took Lori Lightfoot for a ride with the low sanctioning fees) running a race in Joliet so a downtown crash fest it is.

The Hotel tax is effectively 17.39% split among City, County, State and other smaller taxing bodies. The ticket tax is 9% to City and sales tax of 10.25% on top of that of which the City, County and State are beneficiaries.. The City has the most hotels and the most events. As the generator of revenue for the County, the State and miscellaneous others, not sure what the problem is providing support to the City for the extraordinary expenses necessary to keep the party partying.

I do not get $5M on NASCAR in downtown Chicago. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

“… if it’s such a wonderful economic development program to bring these folks into town every year and it brings so much economic income to the city, why do we need to subsidize it?” DeWitte asked.”

Great question, too bad there wasn’t a great answer.

And where’s the proof for the claim by Dems that this event had an economic impact worth millions? Did they factor in the losses downtown business face due to the heart of the tourist district being shut down for nearly a month for NASCAR?

Actually, the city cleared a measly 50K after all costs and putting its residents through maddening traffic patterns.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
