Illinois received a qualified opinion, which means that independent auditors found issues significant enough to limit their assurance on portions of the financial statements.
Well this article has a great headline but it doesn’t hold anyone accountable. The auditors for illinois are actually hired by the legislature and live within the illinois political ecostructure for 10 year terms. The sickening part is Illinois has a long history of recurring issues such as significant funding of pension issues, unemployment trust accounting issues, internal control weaknesses, etc. What is even more egregious is that the opinion relates to the unemployment compensation fund and other areas in the audit got a clean bill of health (unqualified opinion.)
