"The more aggressive map is even more contorted than thefirst — though perhaps more effective at delivering seats for Democrats. It was crafted in consultation with national Democrats, according to a source familiar with its origin."
Wow! If you thought Friday’s official draft of the Illinois redistricting map was gerrymandered, take a look at the extreme version prepared “in consultation with” the national Dems!
15D-2R! Princeton gerrymander review gives it an F.
Of course, the maps are made in secret and no one knows the inputs into these maps and I wonder if gerrymander can turn into a dummymander. for example, did they only use 2020 blue wave turnout? Or did they use 2014 when Rauner won as a worst case scenario, or some sort of hybrid. Did they look at future housing developments or building permits for areas outside of towns? Who knows!
I guess the Illinois Dems are saying, “We may not be able to wipe out Covid, but we can sure wipe out Illinois Republicans in Congress!”
You make a good point, too: a redistricting scheme that is too finely tuned could turn against the perpetrators given enough demographic changes, or if they made the wrong assumptions from earlier voting patterns.
All the states are doing this but IL seems to have taken it to the extreme. Supposedly NY is getting ready to release their map and it will be even more extreme than IL.
But with the veto session coming up, maybe they will pass a midnight bill with a 17D-0R map, with multiple hispanic and black districts, and yell Democracy!!! We did it!
I don’t put anything past these people. They’ve shown themselves to be completely insane and nothing is out of the question.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.

I doubt there will be very many future housing developments.
