Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Americans Continue to Move out of Big Cities – The Antiplanner
You have to give credit where credit is due: Pritzger is being a visionary. He realizes that sooner or later he will be on the debate stage with Newsom and the victor will be the governor that can point to the greater number of radical left policies and programs. Of course JB knows that the financially prudent and responsible thing to do would be to focus on shoring up pension funds as much as possible. But he also knows that would garner him zero political points with the new face of the liberal party – The Squad and its ilk.… Read more »
JB can try to out California California but IL produces only one president per century, and there’s already been an IL president this century. JB has about as much chance as being president as the governor of North Dakota.
This author is right as the government in Illinois being progressive, but he’s wrong about the people, who are moderate, as polls overwhelmingly show. Progressive politicians have punched way about their weight here for many reasons, which we will be writing about. He is probably also right that the population is becoming more progressive and progressives move in and others flee. Note, however, that he has only anecdotal evidence about that. As I’ve written before, we badly need researchers to focus on that. It’s a hugely important issue no doubt reshaping America.
Yes, we need the research to demonstrate how people truly feel, but if that research never gets distributed then what good is it? The liberal mainstream media would bury that research or never acknowledge it exists. Virtually every national and local “news” is simply propaganda. Not only what is presented, but the manner in which it is presented, is entirely biased. Our only hope is for the progressives to push too hard, too fast, resulting in a tipping point that causes real backlash.
Progressive is not the correct word. That is a glorification an cover up of what it really is. T. Roosevelt was a Progressive.
Illinois is a modern day Socialist state.
Good catch. Also, many consider themselves “Democratic Socialists” unless someone asks them to spread their wealth.
The sorting is not done yet. I’m a 56 year old lifelong resident taking my six figure income to Tennessee on Aug 4. Sayonara!
Many are saying the best views of IL are in the rear view mirror.
You will love it there. I know seven couples who have made the same move over the last three years and all of them couldn’t be happier. And wait till you hear how refreshing it is just to sit around and chat about good schools, no crime, beautiful mountains, rising property values and good politicians. No one mopes about taxes, crime, illegal aliens, corruption, teen mobs, car jackings or all the other topics that dominate any conversation in the Chicago metro area.
Kind of an odd article, but reflective of the bubble many in Chicago live in. This ‘oasis’ of Chicago progressiveness/ marxism is heavily dependent on handouts/ bailouts being funded by the prosperous Red States the author holds in contempt. So is it an oasis, or rather an aberration?
Ed McClelland pens this opinion piece as if it were something to be proud of. Illinois ranks at the top of states that people and businesses are fleeing. Ed will never get an abortion, but he’s only to excited at the prospect of more baby killing. Illinois is a nightmare of corruption and single party rule, perfect for JB the Hutt’s dictatorial regime, as was the rubber stamp Chicago City Council was for Hizzoner. There is no opposition. Illinois is bankrupt on every level. Morally, fiscally, you name it. The state is run by those only interested in absolute power.… Read more »
Yet, they’ll still vote Democrat every election, despite their unhappiness and unease at the current situation.
That is the unfortunate reality that the Ill GOP fails to recognize. they are a doomed Party in this state just as they are in California.
I think the IL GOP does recognize that they are the doomed party. But they try to keep the grift going because I’m never going to stop voting Republican, ever. But as I often point out, this is not unique to Illinois, as most opposition parties in most states are doomed. The Indiana Democrat Party is so hopeless they haven’t updated their website in several years, they’re still begging for money to rebuild infrastructure to “hit the ground running for 2022 elections”. We are now almost a year past 2022 elections, looking into 2024. The bigger picture is that we… Read more »
Just the other side of the “vote blue no matter who” coin.
Yes, except it is the correct side. Democrat bad, Republican less bad. Easy to remember!
It’s not for you or me to decide that but the overall voters.

votersballots harvestedI had to read Communist Manifesto,1984 and Animal Farm while attending Hyde Park HS in the early 1960s. Now the students cannot even read or do simple math!
They
re not progressives they`re ALL MARXISTS know your ENEMYAnd it shows!
And don’t forget signing a bill that turns illegal aliens into cops. He’s not a progressive– he’s an anarchist.
All them small town liberal, college educated young adults have moved to Chicago to become victims of the rampant violent crime. However, since they feel they are part of the problem why minorities commit 98% of the violent crimes they don’t care that everyday their life is in danger. Let’s hope it becomes a reality.
The good news is that pipeline of Big 10 to Big City is drying up, fast, and before long, most people in the state will be a native or an illegal immigrant. This is the first step towards taking back IL from the degenerate Democrats.
