Hi Ted, I posted a link to a Social Determination Theory primer in the Tablet Magazine DEI article. You should check out, because it ties in nicely with this discussion tonight. Here it is again: https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-self-determination-theory-2795387 One of the few faults I see in SDT is it’s failure to directly address the reciprocal effects of social factors in behavior and judgment. Observational learning or ‘modeling’ of prominent social figures and group norms also plays a huge part in influencing behavior. Ryan and Deci vaguely refer to these tendencies as ‘relatedness’ or some form of normative conformity. This might help explain… Read more »

Social Determination Theory provides a sound antithesis in response to the Chicago machine’s encroachments. SDT is backed by countless experiments and empirical evidence. Johnson’s labeling of those facing adversity as traumatized is just plain wrong.

Choice and agency are what has made our great nation the best in the world! This is undisputed. I know several people that have done great and risen out of poverty. Johnson is just plain wrong. Telling people that they can only get further in life with the help of the government is a lie. We need more leadership and good examples for young kids to learn from, not bureaucracy, Angela Davis or Fred Hampton. Here’s a great story. Hard work and planning turned Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards from postmen into industry leaders. They speak well and have self… Read more »

Wealth has choices galore. Poverty in America is not real poverty like you would see in Africa or India. Our poor have cell phones and all the unhealthy food a SNAP card can buy. In America the poor are paid to be pawns through welfare, denied school choice, their numbers must be leveraged for the unions and the votes. They are largely brainwashed, Stockholm syndrome. I’m not convinced the welfare class wants to fight at all for choice, know what it is or it’s benefit to their kids. That would involve some work on their part, the parent. If they… Read more »

I saw something the other day, not sure how true is, but in canada they did a study and found that poor immigrants to Canada lose an average of 10 years off their life expectancy, from having to work difficult low wage jobs and exposure to unhealthy first world habits.

I hope when you say we can fight it to bring it back, it’s true. I remember, initially we fought hard to convince them not to discontinue school choice, but they did. I seriously doubt they will change their mind now. They already have their victory. If they don’t get your tax dollars because of your choice, they will want to make another financial deal benefiting them. There is going to have to be a “quid pro quo” if they consider negotiating with you. I applaud you all for trying.
