Illinois lawmakers considering statewide bag tax – Illinois Policy

House Bill 5112, proposes that businesses charge 10 cents per carryout bag starting in 2027. The tax would be increased by five cents a year until 2030, when it would cap at 25 cents. However, fees would continue to increase by five cents a year until certain goals regarding the reduction of bags are met. This increase would continue until statewide bag usage drops to 90 percent below 2027 levels.

Can a breathing tax be next? As we know, the Democrat solution to any and every problem is a new tax or further increasing existing taxes! The Illinois governor and the state legislature have zero financial acumen or discipline!

Well Illinois needs spending money to continue to pay for the goodies the voters demand so new taxes are needed. Of course the voters could demand a cut in spending but, as history has shown, that will never happen.

This will once again be the Law of Unintended Consequences. Look at the Gas Tax. It has not generated the revenue they thought (due to EVs and Hybrids), so State Senator Ram Vilivalam has bandied about a Mileage Tax where Everyone has a GPS type device that measures Miles Traveled, upon which you pay a tax on that amount. Look at Recreational Pot. People are buying the Illegal stuff because IL Taxes it too heavily. The Bag Tax will encourage people to use those Reusable Bags, and that Tax will fall short of projections like the ones I mention above.… Read more »

Wait a minute. How about a ‘protestor tax’? Every one of the paid (and the few unpaid) protestors must ante up to cover police overtime and damages to businesses, including lost wages.

US Bureau of Labor Statistics informed me that the Consumer Price Index does not include any bag tax. They pointed out that there is no way for them to know how many bags would be needed for any particular item(s) purchased. Thus the tax doesn’t cause measured inflation.

25 cent tax for a bag? They already tax our food. How long before they tax the air we breathe? Why do Illinois residents keep electing these moronic fools?

When you are in the south, they give you paper bags without a charge and you aren’t limited to one just in case they are needed in the next apocalypse. All recyclable. So why not tell businesses they need paper bags? Plastic bags are a waste and stores try to give you as many as possible.

State Rep. Laura Faver Dias, D-Karen, loves confiscating money from Illinoisans almost as much as Little Ralphie Martire does. The gas tax hikes weren’t enough. The toll tax isn’t enough. The out-of-control property taxes aren’t enough. Nope. Any justification is good with political animal scoundrels like Loony Laura here. This karen wants to impose yet another item on business owner to-do lists. Yet another tax to be audited and collected by highly compensated and pensioned IDOR personnel.

Just stop it, karen. We have had quite enough from you and your Epstein-plane-riding governor, JB the Hutt.

Yet the sheeple keep electing them to office because they hate the orange man and anything that doesn’t have DEI involvement.

Its not the people, its those that count the votes. Why else would they fight tooth and nail to stop anyone from seeing the voter rolls.
