Illinois school boards should provide opportunities to all kids in their districts – Illinois Policy

Some Illinois school boards allow all resident children – including private and homeschooled kids – to participate in district activities. That should be the case for all taxpaying families in all districts.

It is clear the public schools have no accountability for their “budgets”. While taxpayers are seeing their taxes soar, the schools continue to spend like drunken sailors ie: hiring new administrators, new sports facilities, fancy murals on the schools, etc. while the students grades remain at or below grade level. If they were run like a private school, their operating model would be substantially more cost efficient and they would answer for the academic performance. While allowing parents who home school or send their kids to private school to take advantage of some of the activities offered by public school districts may provide some minor return for the property tax paid…, those are some expensive extracurricular programs for those parents. My guess is that most parents would rather have the funding approach for public schools changed to a per student approach and have their property taxes greatly reduced or eliminated for public schools.
