“Push back against the age as hard as it pushes against you.”
― Flannery O’Connor

This is to share some insights we gained over the holidays, mostly about you readers, from data we get and notes from you.
We also hope this sheds light on how we approach our work at Wirepoints. We follow the research about how people get their news, particularly over the internet. It’s a fascinating subject for us data geeks and hugely important since it shapes people’s worldview, and we try to apply that research here.
First, here’s a big gold star for Wirepoints readers: You actually read stuff. You spend on average well over four minutes per column on our Wirepoints original pieces. That blows away industry norms that are widely found to be about a minute or less per column. Most readers on other sites read the headline and the first couple paragraphs then move on. Even for long-form columns over 1,000 words, as ours often are, readers on other sites usually spend around two minutes or less. You apparently have over twice their attention span.
You’re apparently getting younger, too! In years past our readers tended to be older. In 2019, for example, our largest group of readers was age 55 to 64 and just 2% were between 18 and 24. Today, our largest age group is 35 to 44, over 8% are between 18 and 34, and all of the younger cohorts have grown very significantly.
We need work, however, to reach more female readers. Just 37% of our web readers are women, which has been about that way from the start, for reasons unclear.
About a third of you are pilgrims, as one of you recently put it — ex-Illinoisans. That portion has been trending upward, reaching half of our online readership in some recent months. We hope you are working to assure that your new states do not make Illinois’ mistakes.
The topics that deeply resonate with you broadened significantly last year, continuing a trend. We know quickly whether an article matters or bores you. Google Analytics and other tools tell us in great detail how many readers an article gets, where they are, how often it is shared and much more – pretty much everything short of names and personal information.
In years past, our top issue was Illinois’ state and local fiscal crisis, particularly pensions, which we view as an existential threat. High taxes, particularly property taxes, which are a consequence of that fiscal crisis, have always been hot buttons. They still are and rightly so.
But last year, recognition of multiple, equally frightening threats to the state culminated, including failing public schools, woke political indoctrination in education, shrinking population and tax base, one-party government protected by a rigged system, excessive public union power and, most importantly, crime.
You should know, however, that we choose our topics based on what we think is important, not you. So, for example, we wrote regularly in the past about reckless spending on certain green energy programs. The articles were duds. Few read them.
But we stayed on it and last year interest picked up markedly and we are happy to see that so many now question what we regard as naïve over-reliance on prohibitively expensive renewable energy projects in Illinois.
On the other hand, we’ve also written often about the progressives’ distortion of the news, the left’s assault on free speech and the regular media’s suppression of facts they don’t like. Those articles of ours got little traction but we have no intention of backing off. We believe in the marketplace of ideas and that its enemies are enemies of democracy itself.
On that, we expect no help from Illinois media. Though we send hundreds of thousands of readers to them each year through links to their articles, many Illinois traditional news sources pretend we don’t exist. Last week, for example, the Chicago Tribune wrote about the problem of 911 calls going unanswered – as if they discovered the problem. They made no mention of our column from June that exposed the problem, which my collogues researched meticulously. The Tribune could easily have written about the problem six months earlier than they did by reporting our research.
The Tribune has at least occasionally published our guest articles, but a number of other outlets, such as the Chicago Sun-Times and Politico, have almost never mentioned us.
So be it. They will continue to lose readership to sources like us and those who recognize our work.
Talk radio remains a bright spot for real debate and some local TV channels are balanced, but for the most part Illinois news is a fictional narrative, nakedly suppressing facts and analysis that might upset the ruling establishment’s worldview. Illinois, like most of America, would be an entirely different place if legacy media were honest.
The good news is that national media outlets now routinely cite or publish our work, which is why we cannot give a true estimate of our full reach. The Wall Street Journal, RealClear, ZeroHedge, The New York Times and many others have cited our work approvingly, and many lesser-known outlets often republish our columns, which we encourage with no charge. Those sources and our radio appearances now give us far more reach than just our measurable website traffic.
You readers seem intent on understanding how bad things truly are, based on the notes many of you sent along with your donations during our year-end fundraising. We were flattered and humbled but, more importantly, delighted by how many recognize the full gravity of the insanity that has overtaken Illinois and most of the nation.
If I were to summarize the attitude in those notes from you, it would be that quote at the top from novelist Flannery O’Connor, “Push back against the age as hard as it pushes against you.” In that, we share your dedication.

Expect no retraction or apology. This what they do.
The state’s existing buyout program for its own pensions is the precedent for Chicago, which should be a warning: Look out for similar exaggerated claims and shoddy analysis.
The local government must publish public notices in local newspapers. This revenue stream may influence legacy media.
This is a great article
Wirepints is my primary source of local/IL news. Thank you for creating a 1 stop shop that is easy to navigate. Also, LOVE the comment feature as many readers provide more color to some of the stories. Also supper cool to share this data with us! Lastly, to the 33% Pilgrims out there: please hold the line in whatever state you are. I wll be moving out of this hell hole in next 12-24 months far away from this insanity. Keep the idiots here in Chicago area and let them enjoy the rewards of the the great candidates they keep… Read more »
Kudos to Wirepoints for curating the news we need to know.
As an biological female it saddens me that not that many of my biological gender (gotta be careful here) read the columns thoroughly – both my husband (who IS a genuine at-birth male) and I read and comment frequently.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you Wirepoints. I value this publication.
I’m applying for the new “poet laureate” job. Thanks to Wirepoints for informing me of the position. Times are changing that’s for sure A once great city down the sewer Shoplifters stealing all of the time Lil Kim says “that ain’t no crime” Police Chief says that crime is down A big city clown his name is Brown Lori brags she’s got a big crotch Gangbangers guns get another notch Stores are closing with windows empty Government bushels with cash aplenty Call the cops and none will show Bodies all over lined in a row So sad to see what’s… Read more »
Thank you to Wirepoints for all you do.
The only way to save the state is to get enough voters to understand that policies that have been sold as good and just are actually the cause of all the problems we see. Your stories on education and crime move us in that direction. How many would be aware of the appalling school scores, or 911 calls going unanswered, without Wirepoints reporting? Keep up the great work.
In all honesty, the news here frustrates and depresses me. I feel like I’m surrounded by ideological enemies, and no matter how much we fight back, we lose ground at every turn. I am a stranger in my own town. This most recent election has been difficult, now the state is the bluest its ever been in its 205 year history, and the policies coming out of Springfield are outright hostile to the 46% of voters who did not Always Vote Blue No Matter Who. It’s only a matter of time before there’s a clot shot mandate for school kids,… Read more »
“These are the times that try men’s souls….” But I have no quarrel with those who move.
The state is actively hostile to all things conservative. They’re trying to force us out. They’re attacking from all angles, all at once, and we are legitimately overwhelmed. This goes far, far beyond the previous decades of my life where, by happenstance of birth, I tolerated living in a poorly run Democrat state. Today is a completely different animal because we are a progressive and not a Democrat state. Progressive politics intentionally make life inhospitable for anyone with mainstream values. That’s their official policy positions. It’s like this in all progressive states so IL is not unique; but this brand… Read more »

I think the only solution is an IL GOP effort to ballot harvest 3.5 million ballots every election. I’m not really in the loop on IL GOP politics (what a sad, sorry bunch of powerless nobodies they are) but someone, whose job it is to do these things, needs to step up and organize the ballot harvesting schemes. It can be done. We just need to stop the progressives’ forward progress and push back and the only way to do that is ballot harvesting on a scale unlike anything we’ve ever seen. The CA GOP and the NY GOP did… Read more »
I have turned the news off which includes MSM, Fox, and Newsmax. Its healthy to totally unplug and do something different. Whatever that may be. Watch the Rockford Files or Barnaby Jones. Tune out. Eat healthy and enjoy a nice steak. Listen to the Electric Light Orchestra. The state is gone and so is the city. Its been in the tea leaves for a long time, unfortunately all accelerated under lockdowns as Illinois has the worst political leadership in the US. Been going this direction for many years. I got out but there were still enough Beto signs and bumper… Read more »
I agree that liberals/Dems are actively trying to force conservatives out of IL, or at the very least, making it clear they won’t miss us if we do leave. But many if us can’t, for various reasons. While I’m not blaming anyone for leaving if they can, on the other hand, if everyone conservative leaves, isn’t that letting “them” win without a fight? And what guarantee is there that the next place you move won’t turn blue and you’ll be back in the same boat?
Moving out of state really is the only answer.
So do it already. Come to Tennessee if you’re tired of losing elections. Down here conservatives actually win big. It’s only a one-day drive Nashville to Chicago if you want to visit.
I am a lifelong IL resident who stopped getting their news from the Tribune and Sun Times years ago. There is no real news there and instead left-ist slant! Keep up the great work. I read your email updates almost daily.
Sad but absolutely true!
I can’t even imagine the Tribune or Sun-Times publishing something like this, allowing its readership to look behind the curtain on how it selects topics and why it pursues stories.
Thank you, Wirepoints team, for your candor and honesty in researching and publishing stories and having the confidence to be persistent and focused on both the good and the bad in this state.
Fatty Arbuckle and the “ Our Gang “ group
Are the biggest laugh in the States. As long as the idiots keep electing them the show will go on. The people with finances continue to move
leaving the rest to struggle to pay the extortion

The best view of Chicago is in the rear view mirror
I personally skim long winded articles. I find that if a post or an article drones on and on, there is a lot of useless information. Get to the point and keep the articles a shade smaller. Then you will get more female readers. Also, we are concerned about our kids, schools, library and all the wokeness impacting our kids. Mental health issues with the masking and lockdowns.
While I’m sure Wirepoints appreciates the feedback, this is the major problem with attracting more female readers as well as average voters. The problems Illinois faces stem from issues created over multi-generations. In order to fix the problem, one must fully understand the root cause as well as what can be legally done to fix the problem. That requires educating the voters and not something that is easily done in a few words. When both sides try to boil down the arguments to as few as words as possible, we are left with one side defining the other as racists… Read more »
The Problem Illinois has is people like you over 30 years have destroyed the quality of life for the private sector families. They are now fleeing in large numbers and the numbers keep growing. All that will be left in due time is poor immigrants and government lackies. You both deserve each other.
“That requires educating the voters and not something that is easily done in a few words.”
Does this include butt plugs and dildos being used as props by teachers union pedos?
Thanks for that input.
Thank you Wirepoints. Truly a game changer in the face of Illinois CIG (corruption, incompetence, and greed) politics.
Adam Kinzinger, the famous traitor from Illinois, hired by CNN as a political commentator. Who could have guessed that? Not even 1 day after being kicked to curb from his seat in the House of Representatives this so called conservative Republican joins the most left wing biased so called news outlet around. Kinzinger, you are a worthless waste of skin.
Please get his title correct…he will be a Senior Political Commentator due to his stellar representation for the State of Illi-noise ^s
Senior traitor in my opinion
I personally read a lot of non-mainstream sites, wirepoints, zerohedge, theduran, sonar21, and many substack writers, too many to list. I make it a point to only read sites that have reader forums. “Letters to the editor” are a tradition in America, reader comments make news fun. So I thank wirepoints for the reader comments. I stopped reading another Illinois policy-based web site several years ago, simply because to this day they still have no reader comments. Its just a one-way street over there at that site, that’s a shame because they have talent there but they are afraid of… Read more »

Same with me. Too bad because it was/is a good site.
We pilgrims read your stuff and delight in all the problems you report. It reinforces our decision to leave. Consider this. We pilgrims would feel pretty stupid, if after we left, the state somehow started improving. I’m sure you realize this already, but in the short run, Wirepoints is helping destroy Illinois. It gives residents so many reasons to leave the state by reporting facts. Every one of us that leaves pushes that dagger a little deeper towards the heart of Illinois. I used to think, perhaps like you, that once Illinois reaches collapse that its residents will be open… Read more »
Like you, I am a former Ill-annoy-an. Regarding the increasing exodus from the state, I applaud those who depart, but not because it further justifies my decision to move. Rather, each one is another example of the blessed freedom we have as Americans to search for a better life for ourselves and our families. We love competition, fairness, good values, opportunity, education, optimism; we love freedom! As a state, Illinois is providing less and less of each one of those things we love and seek. So as Ill-annoy continues its downward spiral, I pray that somehow, some way, those who… Read more »
Don’t feel too bad about the Tribune — local political bloggers all have their own tales of the Tribune’s journalistic appropriation. This will only get worse as the Tribune staff has been purged of real journalists, leaving only Democrat party typists and left wing fabulists.
