Is Pritzker’s graduated tax plan in trouble? – Crain’s*

Greg Hinz: "The latest polling made available to me by a reliable source shows the amendment's fate is now very uncertain. Support for the proposition is less than the 60 percent that would guarantee its approval as a stand-along proposition, but more than the 50 percent that would allow it to pass under a different rule that enacts any amendment backed by more than half of those who turn out for the election."

Either way, a city income tax is coming. Count on it.

This is an interesting topic regarding the passing of the amendment. My intuition suggests that it is harder to get the 60% of those voting on the topic to pass, so that means the easier to fulfill is the one to focus on: 50% of all those casting a ballot at all have to be in favor of the proposed amendment. What stands out in that scenario is the number of people who don’t know or don’t care to vote on that part of the ballot – I wonder where it is shown or if it is bolded or in… Read more »

I can’t speak for Cook county but for Dupage the question takes up the entire left hand side of the first page.

The Fair Tax will most likely get 50% of the vote. Their deceptive messaging is too hard to counter. The question is whether it’ll need 60% or a simple majority of all votes cast. It is important that everyone talks to their lesser-informed family and friends and tell them to vote NO. It’s the undecideds that will determine if this passes or fails. You have to venture outside your conservative circles. Moderate Democrats can be swayed to vote NO. I have swayed many myself. There are hundreds of thousands of them in suburban Chicago. We just have to reach them.… Read more »

Don’t waste your time arguing with progressives on the Fair Tax either. If you see a FB thread with a Fair Tax falsehood, only insert yourself enough to counter their talking points. But don’t bother with a constant back-and-forth with SJW’s on social media. You will not change their vote. They cannot be converted or de-programmed. But if there’s a moderate listening, you might be able to appeal to them. That should be the target audience for the next month.

My prediction is another low voter turnout and the Democrat vote harvesting machine will be in full operation.
I hope I am wrong.

I ran a few numbers and if you got a turnout like the gubernatorial year, it would be close and probably pass, to be honest. But I agree turnout will be low so a large number of NO voters are required. The problem is the secondary 50% of all ballots cast seems like an end around of what should be a hard standard to pass. It doesn’t make sense to me that the standard would be easier, or that there would be two of them. It isn’t anywhere near that for a national amendment.

It should be in trouble, it deserves to be. What a cheek, raising taxes during a recession, and after shutting down the very taxpaying businesses like mine with unlawful orders. May I again thank Mr Griffin for his financial support running ads against the proposal. They are very effective, and probably driving the Governor and his radial left bat crazy. The people of Illinois deserve so much better than Mr Pritzker and his special interests and political cronies. Btw I am also pleased the President has pulled the rug on the stimulus and any state aid. No bail out for… Read more »

We should trust the arguments put forth by a billionaire who declared an $8 million mansion unihabital to save $350K in real estate taxes. Dont think so.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
