Number of half-empty Chicago public schools doubles, yet lawmakers want to extend school closing moratorium – Wirepoints
A set of state lawmakers want to extend CPS’ current school closing moratorium to February 1, 2027 – the same year CPS is set to transition to a fully-elected school board. That means schools like Manley High School, with capacity for more than 1,000 students but enrollment of just 78, can’t be closed for anther three years. The school spends $45,000 per student, but just 2.4% of students read at grade level.
There is no leadership in Illinois. Just these want to be demigods.
Reopening the schools will require substantial new expenses: cleaning / PPE / food service modifications / testing / distancing barriers / etc etc etc. Inevitably, there will be tax hikes coming down the pike. When they hit, tell yourself that “it’s for the children” and has nothing to do with continued 3% annual raises for the teachers who retired in their mid-fifties and now have six figure pensions.
Or, you could move to Texas where the school portion of your real estate tax bill is frozen for life at age 65.
I hope that Queenie has an apron, scrub brush and bucket of water because that is all that I am willing to pay for the fiscal mess that she and J. Beluga have made of school finances in Illinois.
KEEP ‘EM CLOSED J.B. PLEASE!!!
Consistent failures of the public school system aside, children should go back to school asap. Health care workers, law enforcement, grocery store clerks… all ESSENTIAL from day one! Isn’t educating children essential as well ??? With caution and concern for those at higher risk, having younger teachers, those with antibodies, working more closely with children,… with older individuals, those with underlying conditions, performing safer jobs in the school system.

Today, the doctors say this. Tomorrow, they’ll say something else. ?
Parents are much better educators. ?
Attending CPS school and learning nothing or being at home learning nothing, I don’t see much difference.
I agree local school districts should decide on how they should open and deliver education to children. It is their business, their chosen profession, they are formally trained on how to do it, they have advanced degrees and are highly compensated to do so….so do it. That’s what Trump is saying (albeit badly) if we the tax payers are going to send Billions of dollars to the school districts to teach children…then figure out how to teach, be effective and be relevant in the COVID environment. Because right now – you are not. you have been more or less closed… Read more »
On this point I agree 100% with Lori.
Keep these commie indoctrination centers closed!!!
I am a Trump supporter. I do however think Trump should let Chicago/Illinois run it’s educational system as it sees fit even if it hurts the kids. The people of the city/state voted for these Dems and should have to live with the consequences. If Chicago fails at educating it’s students, that’s just too bad. Nobody is forced to live there.
If CPS fails? What’s the graduation rate from CPS high schools? What levels are h.s. students performing at fir reading and math? CPS system is already a failed entity.
But its about the children. Oh wait…it actually is!
We’ve been battered enough Lori. Stop the abuse already.
That’s right you decide to open the schools or not!
Those who do not, follow thru, President Trump and Pull states and cities Federal school funding! No slush fund for those hindering America’s children’s education!
The very liberal Philly Inq. had an editorial where they said just the opposite–the feds need to step up and issue one-size-fits-all guidelines and money for schools to open.
