New Illinois laws will impact thousands of students in the new year – NBC5 (Chicago)

Among them, House Bill 3247, also known as The Safe Schools for All Act, will ensure that Illinois students will be guaranteed a public education regardless of their immigration status or their parents’ immigration status. Schools will not be permitted to discourage students from going to school based on their real or perceived immigration status, such as asking for Social Security Numbers.

If the state “guarantees” an education, does that means the schools will be held accountable when those students graduate without knowing how to read or do math? Schools would be violating the law when they do that.

I think your premise as most citizens would see it is reasonable in the sense of how it’s stated constitutionally. But, in the practical sense all the state can do is offer a tax supported opportunity to be educated. Why should IL taxpayers pay to educate illegals? That money could be better spent to improve education for legal students.

After recent ICE enforcement actions in a nearby town, our local superintendent issued a statement claiming that ICE makes students feel unsafe, etc., etc.I sent her an email fully agreeing with her and suggesting she wasn’t doing enough to protect them. I recommended that the only way to truly safeguard her undocumented students would be to instruct them to stay home and never attend classes again, and to advise their parents to leave the country immediately!
