Niles District 219 Board approves a 90-minute late start each week for staff prep time for learning – Chicago Tribune/MSN

Board Vice President Joe Nowik praised the “student centered” elements of the plan, but in a statement said he couldn’t support the plan as presented. As a district parent of a student with an individualized education plan, Nowik said he “cherished every 15 minutes of speech and physical therapy we were able to add to the schedule. I believe every parent would want more teacher-student time, not less.” The proposal would subtract 45 hours a year of instruction from the school year, he said.

So basically 90 minutes less instruction time for the majority of students to accommodate some alleged “meeting “ time with underperforming students. Of course these teachers are so busy in their non classroom time that they could not arrange to meet with students during the day as it is currently scheduled. My frustration with teacher is reaching its limit. They need to be exposed to the level and intensity of the work that it performed by the people that support their school systems, and end their whining.

That’s because you know nothing about their job so you assume that those teachers don’t need 90 minutes each week for planning. Your ignorance is causing you to reach your limit.

The bell schedule breaks down to (9) 42= minute periods, plus a 10 minute home room, with 5 minute passing periods. Most teachers teach 5 class periods, 6th period can be study hall but only 1 semester per year and there is a list somewhere of other 6th period options, 7th period for lunch, 8th period for self directed… Read more »
