This is not alarming or surprising. The disease culls out of the herd the old unhealthy people, and in nursing homes, they’re all crammed into their rooms, spreading disease everywhere. Quite frankly, I don’t know if this is even preventable. The longer the disease goes on, it seems this wuhan virus is just spread through the air, like pollen or dust, that travels indiscriminately, until an unlucky victim breathes it in. Which would make sense given that China seemed to spend a tremendous amount of effort fogging the air 24/7 with a mystery fog sprayed from large trucks and handheld… Read more »

When popes, puritan preachers or politicians have the final word on science, individual survival is a roll of the dice. And if our ignorance continues until November their partisans will vote on who was at fault. Sic transit. …. In a proper authoritarian state, the whole matter would be turned over to the Ministry of Blame. A couple people would be shot and the issue would be settled. So do we hold or fold in this game of chance? I’m guessing more are worried about their financial well-being than their health. A low and random risk of death from infection… Read more »

Popes, puritans preachers and politicians aren’t any better than the epidemiologists, who have exposed their science for the utter snake oil that it is. But on the one hand, this is all so very overblown; but on the other hand, it’s something may we should hold, rather than fold, because it would be completely insane to just accept the idea that most residents of nursing homes, and the elderly, and the unhealthily and obese, should succumb to the Wuhan Flu in the next few weeks. I have half a dozen poor, morbidly obese, elderly and unhealthy relatives, all of whom… Read more »

Looked at under a sufficiently powerful microscope, it’s nostrums all the way down with mixed agendas from bottom to top. For example (my opinion), For many, it’s all about dislodging Trump to save Supreme Court seats aimed at preserving abortions and taking away guns. A different focus reveals preservation of the wealth and the power of the snake oil sales force: those with licenses and patents (or chutzpah) to market the types of solutions that accountants and lawyers and actuaries and consultants offer. A wealthy and complex society isn’t buying voodoo yet, but the priests are out there.

” to market the types of solutions that accountants and lawyers and actuaries and consultants offer” I’m hearing rumblings out there among friends and family at law firms and accounting firms that partner’s draws are already being cut drastically, in some cases, up to 50%, hoping to save staff jobs; and if this goes on too long, the staff layoffs will be forthcoming. But you’re absolutely right – JB gives lip service to saving lives, but behind the scenes, with his office staff, is actively participating in what they believe is the downfall of Trump. They’re all scum of the… Read more »

The BigLaw world has daily blogs on layoffs, furloughs and partner pay cuts. Most law firms have little capital. The partners know its a snake pit and they want to drain the bank account (and “get theirs”) at the end of every fiscal year. The same blogs reveal that many firms are extending their credit lines because the cash flow is dwindling fast. Lease payments in tall urban buildings (particularly on the upper floors) add to a very large monthly “nut.” They are the wizards but they live in Oz. Projecting vulnerability is not good for business so you have… Read more »
