Looking at 109 city and county budgets nationwide, about 90% of these local governments set aside either more or about the same amount of money for law enforcement agencies in the past three years. Locally, in Joliet, police funding increased by 6.1%. In Elgin, police funding is up 9.9%. In Chicago, there's been a 14.7% increase. Naperville saw a 15.7% increase in police funding between 2019 and 2022.
What the ABC7 Data Team does not say about the 15.7% in Naperville only 6% increase was for patrol while administration got 26% and dispatch 29% increase for that same time period. I wonder what other departments are doing?
So, I finally read the Civic Federation article on the Chicago public safety budget proposal. For the same time frame 2019 vs 2022, the LoL mayor Lori BS had a 10% increase to the police budget. The breakdown to patrols may be in the article, I didn’t look. And hey ABC7 Data Team where did you get 14.7% increase?
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
