Shootings, Homicides in Chicago in 2024 Remain Down Compared to Last Year Through September: Police – WTTW (Chicago)

The CPD said this marks the fewest homicides for any single September in the last five years, while the number of homicides, shootings and shooting victims year-to-date are all at the lowest levels since 2019. The 726 carjackings recorded so far in 2024 are also down 23% compared to the same time last year, according to CPD figures.

Crime is definitely down when it does not get reported. 50% 911 response rate. People know the police are not coming. When you find a body in the river, he drowned. It doesn’t matter that he had 12 gunshot wounds.

It’s nice to crow about crime being down by a fraction from historic levels. Other crimes are still high though such as assaults, thefts, etc. Let’s not pretend that we’re safe just because the focus of crime ( in combination with the unwillingness to prosecute it ) has shifted from people being murdered for a gold chain, phone etc. to either willingly giving it up or having it snatched before the victim knows what hits them. A kinder, gentler thug doesn’t make for a feel good story.
