Shoplifting surged 187% at South Side Walgreens before closure announcement, city data shows – CWB Chicago

Store representatives said the store loses 16 percent of its inventory to theft, four times the company’s average. Walgreens hired security guards at a cost of $400,000 per year and locked up its most frequently stolen merchandise, but executives said those measures failed to stop the losses.

It’s not like grocery stores and pharmacies haven’t tried to open stores in these areas. They try, and a year or two later they fold because of shoplifting and safety issues.

A little culture comparison: I am in Poland and was watching kids arrive at the school across the street from my hotel. They just ride up on their scooters and bikes and park them by the door. No locks.

And the Alderman complained about the closure. Lets see him try to sell it to some rich black entrepreneurs to open it up again and see how that works out

PROVES Walgreens was CORRECT . It’s a business not a charity or food pantry.

It would be a huge success (as long as it’s heavily subsidized by the residential Chicago taxpayers).

I think one commenter on a similar story said something like you could have two lines after you select your goods: one line to pay and the other to walk out of the store without paying. At least that would eliminate that undesirable cost of paying security guards.

187% increase in theft at one store?!
OMG!
It must be the lead in the residential water supply lines!
I mean, what else could it be?!
In the meantime Chicago will have to open city run pharmacies to address the “Drug Store” desert in “underserved” communities!
